Owner description: The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the Civil War's bloodiest battle and was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address".

“Absolutely awesome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2006

We saw a ton of attractions during our first trip to D.C. The visit to Gettysburg was at the top of the list, made so by the licensed tour guide (available at the Visitors Center) that we hired to drive us around. For $45, we got two hours of narration from an extremely knowledgable person. As others have mentioned, you could drive all over the park and have no idea what all the monuments (and there are a TON of them) mean. As it was, we ended up with a far greater understanding of the battle and what it meant to the war.

If you pass up Gettysburg, you’ll be kicking yourself, I guarantee it.

“Simply Excellent”

Simply Awesome. Every one should visit the Gettysburg National Military Park. Even if you are not a history buff the 1,300 plus monuments and memorials are well worth your time. And did I mention the price is right, admission to the park is FREE. I would suggest that you get one of the audio tapes or CD's from the visitors center which guides you through the auto tour stops throughout the park. I spend the entire day at Gettysburg and enjoyed every minute of it

“History is Great”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2005

Gettysburg is a great place to visit. The park is full of history and information. The bus tour was great and showed us many places to go to afterwards for a good view. I was impressed with the atmosphere, which seemed to keep a lot of the battlefield the same as they were when the war was taking place. Great place for history buffs.

“Gettysburg- Great trip!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2005

We took the kids (ages 18, 16 and 11) to Gettysburg the end of July for three days.

I highly recommend Gettysburg for a nice 3 day trip. There is so much to see and do for any ages. We explored the battlefield on the double-decker tour bus the first day we arrived. I highly recommend doing this. It's a great way to get the Gettysburg story as well as a great overview of the town and battlefield. They also give you some info about the monuments and some little known stories. It was wonderful!

During our stay we took in a few museums as well as a few ghost walks. The Jennie Wade ghost tour was fun as it took you inside the house at night. The kids really enjoyed that. We also did the cellar stories at the Farnworth House. Our storyteller was very dramatic (a little too dramatic sometimes) but overall it was a lot of fun.

We also went and explored the battlefield at dusk. That was a wonderful time to go. It seemed less crowded and the area was very beautiful. The stories about camera's not working at Devils Den are true! Both my digital camera and my video camera went haywire. Everything was blurry and out of focus. My daughters 35mm camera rewound itself in the middle of her roll of film.

As for food- The Dobbins House Tavern was a very nice place. The Tavern is in the cellar and it reminds you of an old Irish pub. Very charming!

We also ate at Dino's pizza and a very cute Hot Dog stand. Both were very economical for families, and the food was very good!

“Get a Guide”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 July 2005

We spent two days in Gettysburg on our way to New York. Even if you are not a history buff, you should visit once. You get a real sense of the struggle and sacrifices that were made. We hired one of the licensed guides at the NPS visitors center and were glad we did so. He drove us around the battlefield in our vehicle and other areas for a couple of hours.
His knowledge and enthusium for his subject enabled us to understand the battle and the meaning of certain occurrences, etc. Stories of individual person, heros, cowards, suffering, and joy made the battle and the war very personal and moving. If he had not taken us around, I think we would have wandered around looking at monuments and not really had the understanding and experience we had.
