I travel a lot, have tried a number of PHL airport hotels. I have concluded that PHL airport hotels work on the business model of, "People are forced to stay here so let's just overcharge them, provide scratchy tiny towels, feature 1980s bathrooms and see if we can get away with it." This Four Points seems to follow that model, so I will not be coming back.
I booked via a third party, but I don't think that should doom me to a junk room. I had 3 major complaints. The bathroom was so worn and 1980s looking, my husband said it looked like crew quarters on a fish boat. The chain pull on one of the 2 window shades would not go up more than 8" from the bottom windowsill, so I could not look out the window. I stood on a chair and tied the shade up to the top rod with the broken chain. But then...I learned the VERY LOUD room heater fan did not mean the heater worked. It didn't. So I needed the windowshare down to help keep out the 15-degree weather outside. The thermostat was set at 73 and the room temp was 63. We couldn't get the heater to do anything more than make NOISE so we turned off the heat. The ambient building heat brought the heat up to 66. So my husband and I decided to consider this night at Four Points like alpine camping out and piled on covers and snuggled. We discovered all these things at 10PM after a hard day's work, so we didn't complain until the next morning. We learned that our colleague on another floor had the same problem with his heat. So this suggests to me this wasn't an isolated room problem but a bigger problem-- with the quality of this hotel's management.
Anyway, we complained at check-out, and the apologetic front desk clerk gave us some extra Starwood points. I have always found the staff at these PHL hotels very friendly, nice. They try to please but they are working with out-of-date infrastructure, with somebody in charge making the decision that travelers who want to be by the airport will just have to endure the substandard hotel because so many near PHL are the same low quality. This is not the case for most other cities where I've stayed near the airport. So I'll keep looking for a hotel room near PHL priced under $250. Grrrr.
