“Best Programmed Venue in the Area”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 March 2012

The Bride's strong suit has always been its programming. Over the years we've seen acts such as Spaulding Gray and Sun Ra. Its latest location (which is NOT shown in the picture) is a wonderful space. The main performance area has no bad views, and the acoustics are great. There is also a gallery area which always has an interesting show. There is usually a small selection of wine and beer available, but no food. The only negatives are related to the location- there is no parking lot on site, though there is a garage a block or two away, and only one restaurant nearby. However, it is only about 5 blocks from the restaurant-packed section of Old City near 2nd & Market.

“Excellent venue”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 January 2012

Saw Sandra Bernhard recently and the tickets were general admission but I have to say the venue was wonderful with not a bad seat in the house. The seats without armchairs were very comfortable. The area is really nice and is called Old City. I will explore this area next time I am in Philly.

“Innovative presenter of the arts”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 January 2012

A friend and I went to Painted Bride Art Center for a global music concert presenting the band Yemen Blues in Old City, Philly. The venue is in a mosaic-covered building, one of the most unique and beautiful modern mosaics I have ever seen. The Painted Bride is a non-profit started in 1969 to showcase under-represented cultural art.The acoustics were good, and the band played to a sold-out show. We had an early dinner, featuring Greek cuisine at Dimitri's, then walked to the Painted Bride. There are many other excellent and Zagat-rated restaurants within walking distance. The inside space of the theater shows the lack of financial resources, but once one looks past that to the actual performance, it's a fine way to spend an evening.

“A hidden theater gem.......”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 January 2012

We normally do a girl’s night in the city and my friend purchased tickets for the Burlesque Nutcracker something I thought I would never go to in my life! Well the show was wonderful and the seating was great! They had wine and snacks available for purchase and you also got to see artwork from their featured artist of the month. The only downside is when you come in you have to look at an art installation that looks like a giant red hairball coming out of the wall, gross! Besides that it was a great venue!

“Cannot believe this one has not been reviewed before!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2011

Had to add a review here, as I cannot believe the Bride has never been reviewed before!

One of the better, more interesting small theater and music venues in the Philadelphia area. Have been here so many times, and seen some incredible advant garde theater, dance, band, spoken word, etc. over the years. In a town with a huge theater tradition, the Painted Bride has always stood out as a place to see artists you would not see anywhere else. I was saddened when it appeared the bookings went almost exclusively to Jazz about 10 years ago, but they have returned to their roots, IMO, and now show a much better variety. Also has an interesting art exhibit space for unusual pieces that you can tour before the shows. My only complaint is that they do not book enough shows at this space. Check out the exterior of the venue as well - decorated by famed Philly mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar.

Location of the theater is a bit above Market/Vine off 2nd street in a fairly quiet upscale residential area. Note there is an excellent Persian restaurant a few doors up the street, and makes a great paring when seeing a show.

HIGHLY recommended.
