“Great staff and location are is a bit noisy”
Reviewed 15 July 2012

Staff was beyond good, what is a real important factor to me. Location is just perfect, in the city center. Room was clean and nice, the complimentary breakfast is very generous.
The only reason why no 5 stars:
- the location itself is noisy, cant blame the hotel for it, that's the price being there
- the bathroom light switches were not working
- you need to log in every time again and again to wifi (after losing connection for a while)

I would recommend to anybody to stay there but only if not being too sensitive to street noise.

Stayed at the Independent Hotel for the second time in a year (as an international traveller on business) and was delighted with my stay again. Originally found this hotel on Trip Advisor and the recommendations are on the mark. The hotel is nice and small so one gets personalised service that you would never get in a chain hotel. The rooms are fantastic, the beds comfy, and the amenities modern. As always, free in room Wi-Fi and a customisable continental breakfast delivered to your door each morning are key reasons why the Independent Hotel is so great. The staff are friendly (without being obtrusive) and provide great local recommendations. The hotel is within walking distance to fabulous eating (and shopping for those who want that) and is in a safe area. Would definitely come back a third time to stay and also have no hesitation in recommending to others.

Room Tip: Some rooms can get a little street noise depending on where your room is located. Really depends on...

Our family of 4 stayed one night at The Independent in Philadelphia. A friend of ours recommended it. What a unique hotel! It's definitely not your typical chain hotel...no fancy lobby or big swimming pool, but it had everything we needed! The room was very comfortable and had all the amenaties we needed, including a Keurig coffee maker! :) A complementary breakfast was delivered to our room, the beds were comfortable, the room was clean and very tastefully decorated, and the Phila. neighborhood was safe (and fairly quiet during the night). If I had to make any suggestions, I would recommend different bed comforters. The fabric looked "pilled", making them appear unclean (which I would imagine all hotel comforters are, anyway). Also, there was a beautiful 8-foot-or-so mirror in the room which was not attached to the wall. Since we had a 4- and a 7-year-old with us, we were very concerned that it could easily be knocked down and broken, as it was just leaning up against the wall. Other than that, it was a great place to stay. We would definitely stay there again!

The good...the staff was great, very good restaurant recommendations! The room was nice, loved the hardwood floors, comfy beds, big bathroom, nice shower. Good breakfast delivered to your room, nice wine/cheese reception. Great location for historical sites, as well as for shopping, and Reading Market.

The bad...during the night there were loud banging noises which woke us up. We could not figure out what it was, slamming doors, elevator, toilets flushing? Maybe it was just our room (309)?

DW and myself are just back from a weeks vacation in Philadelphia staying at this hotel.

The location is good being a 15 minute walk from the main shopping area and some 20 minutes walk from the historical area.

All the staff that we encountered were wonderful and could not have been more helpful. We had a problem with our in room TV and this was sorted out by the maintenance man in a matter of minutes.

Our room was a "King Suite" and was very large having a sitting area as well as a bedroom area.

The included breakfast was good and you can choose the time in the morning that this is delivered. Monday to Thursday there was complimentary evening wine served in the lobby area.

The only minor criticism that i would make is that there are no in room safes although they do have a main safe off the lobby area that can be used for valuables.

All in all, this is a wonderful small hotel and I would not hesitate to stay here again if I were to return to Philadelphia.

Room Tip: We were on the second floor on the side street. I would imagine that rooms directly onto Locust Stre...
