Had wanted to stay for some time and finally took a vacation trip to Manhattan with my wife in Jan last year (2017) and arranged a 2 night stay at the Waldorf.

We took a town car for the airport and the driver stopped at the grand entrance, but we quickly whisked away to an odd side entrance and greeted by pompous bell persons who scoffed at us and invested even more energy in sneering at our luggage. I guess we weren’t dressed in appropriate attire, or carrying stylish enough luggage.

I did a little investigating beforehand and learned there was in fact a dress code for the hotel, so we thought we dressed accordingly and were certainly well within compliance. Again, I suppose we didn’t portray a wealthy enough appearance.

As a Hilton Diamond member, we were escorted to a private office for check-in and treated cordially, but still felt a bit belittled, as if we weren’t worthy or their patronage. A bell person met us outside the office and escorted us to our room.

Our room was beautifully decorated and lavish. Wall paper and furniture were very ornate with beautiful amenities. The mattress was extremely comfortable set on a grand bed with chairs, dresser, desk, mini fridge and well stocked restroom. Unfortunately, when we opened our curtains, we had a nice view of a brick wall! (again feeling demeaned)

I called to request a room change and was accommodated to a high floor room with a much better view of the city. Our bell person this time was very kind and offered many suggestions on what to see and where to dine in the city based on our desires.

The lobby was grand and beautiful, marble floors and crowded with mink coats, tuxedos and expensive suits. We made our way to the concierge to inquire about transportation to Little Italy to dine at an Italian restaurant. She was perched behind a podium and actually scoffed at us and rolled her eyes!?! As she proceeded to denigrate us for not being dignitaries, my wife and I found the humor in it and laughed at her. What a miserable person.

Upon returning from a very enjoyable Italian dinner and a little site seeing in Times Square, we returned to the hotel for a night cap in one of the hotel lobby bars. We were pleasantly surprised to be treated like honored guests and well taken care of, one of the waiters had my wife made a cup of hot chocolate made from scratch from the restaurant.

Checkout was easy and we enjoyed the experience for sure. Nicest room we’ve ever stayed in, but found the pompous staff pretty amusing. Such a wealth of history and lavish accommodations, we can only imagine what the large suites were adorned with, our bell person described a few with grand pianos.

Room Tip: Currently closed for renovation.

First room we were given was small and had a very strange odour, however staff at reception moved us straight away when I said I was not happy. The hotel is very dated but it has a certain charm and we enjoyed our stay. Service overall was very good. (Travelled before March 2017)

Overall we loved the hotel with all it’s history and charm but it does need modernising, particularly the rooms. An example of this is the heating, we stayed in Feb and couldn’t get our room warm enough.

Beautiful New York hotel with history and elegance in spades. We stayed just two nights. Our room was beautifully decorated and wonderfully clean. Staff were attentive and courteous and the food was exceptional.

Both the bar crowd and breakfast guests were all slightly older than I expected.

A very expensive stay - but as a one off we felt that our experience was well worth the cost.

It was lovely, think it's over rated and over priced if I'm honest. Service is good although bar bill was never right. Rooms spacious and nice vino, good location too so cannot complain. It's worth a visit.
