Yes, it's true the rooms are small, but this hotel is full of history and charm. Beware of the drink prices; ask for a drink menu so you'll know what you're getting into ($20 per cocktail). It's worth it to have one drink in the lobby, take in the decor, and do some people-watching. The bed was very comfortable, with nice linens. The location is great if you're going to the theatre, and it's also easy to walk to Grand Central Station.

This is the hotel of choice for me when I stay in NYC. It has such rich history and such wonderful character but on my most recent stay there [12/8 - 12/11], I must say that they failed miserably especially given the price - around $600/night with all fees/taxes/services charges tacked on. The doormen were rude; bellhops absent; seating in their renowned restaurant and bar pitiful. I will have to take a second thought when I go back in February. They are planning on closing down for renovations for a very short time after the Holidays and it appears that they've already shutdown with their service. I was extremely disappointed.

Room Tip: Request a room away from the elevators and stairs -- more toward the "wing" parts of the f...

This hotel gas some of the most helpful and courteous employees in NYC. The building is full of historic charm. The restaurant is very good, especially the weekend brunch. The standard room has only a queen bed, pretty small, but elegant. Nice window seat, upscale amenities. The best location you could have for theatre, shopping, nightlife, a short 2 blocks to Times Square. I would absolutely go there again,

Room Tip: Ask about a nice street view, we looked directly into an office building across the street.

I admit the location is quite ideal, that I agree, but other than that, there is nothing I like here...
the room is small, old, stain in the washroom, old hotel, very old
the moment I walk in I feel like I am in a dungeon. the elevator is small and super slow
carpets is old dirty... If it is rated as a 2 star or less I would have no problems with it, but not for 4 stars, can anyone show me where the stars are????

I had been using hotwire to book rooms for over 10 years now, never had a problem before until this one, I really got screwed for this, paying the price of 4 stars for a 2 star hotel maybe not even 2 star........

highly recommended for historians and dungeon masters that is all I can say.

The Algonquin is very well situated in the city - very close to many areas by walking and subways are nearby. The lobby is very pleasing and this area may be used for drinks (although $21 for a martini is a bit high), light snacks, or just people watching. We ate at the round table for dinner one evening and the food was good and the service was excellent. In fact, the entire staff is excellent.

Do not get a room that overlooks the street; it is very, very noisy. Avoid at all costs room 212. Trash pickup is between 4 am and 4:30 am, and it is loud. In fact, the noise level from the street is almost constant. The answer, "Well, this is New York" doesn't seem to make it any better, but that is the response if you mention the noise.

The literary history of the hotel is interesting, and one can imagine Dorothy Parker sitting at the round table holding court. That is worth it.

Room Tip: Choose high and inside
