“Great location, great stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 March 2012

We stay at the Jolly Madison over the Xmas period, the main feature is it's location. You are never far from most tourist attractions from this hotel. Grand Central Station is a short walk and gets you to other places you can't get to by walking (cheaper than yellow cabs - although you should also give this a go. We booked a cab with the hotel to take us back to the airport upon our departure and we got a limo - what a way to leave New York! This was certainly better than our inward travel. Got a transfer just outside the airport and spent 45 minutes driving between terminals collecting other fares before arriving back at our original terminal and heading off to our hotel.
Our room was on a top floor high which was great as it meant less traffic and street noise. We had some problems with the heater in our room but the reception staff eventually resolved this by providing us with a portable heater.
We did not eat at the hotel at all because diners and deli's are available in close proximity. The best meals we found were in China Town and at Planet Holywood. If you are planning to go to Planet Hollywood negotiate a travel within the main section of the restaurant before being shown to your table otherwise you may end up like us on the top floor overlooking the action and not in it.
We took part in typical tourist activities such as Ripleys and the CSI Experience. Disappointed with both unfortunately. Had hoped to see a broadway play but we left it to late and the only available tickts were $199 each. If you ant to get to the to of the Empire State bilding would suggest going early as the queue by mid-day will take at least an hour. The boat trips around New York are great and the best way to see the Statue of Liberty, The Brooklyn Bridge etc.
Make sure you book the 9/11 Memorial at reception. Although very emotional it gives you a true understanding of the events which took place and an appreciation for life and the spirit of New Yorkers.
The store window displays, Xmas trees and ice skating rings are just amazing over Xmas. Ice skating on Xmas Eve on Xmas day was definetely a highlight and the Hot Chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream is wonderful. Do be careful if paying for a padlock for the lockers. I forgot where ours was and soehow managed to gain access to someone elses ;-(
Stumbling across Times Square one evening whilst taking a stroll was enlightening literally. All of a sudden he colour of the sky was bright. There are so many illuminated signs and this area has a real buzz at night time. Didn't care too much for the hoards of people here during the day though.
We did use the hotel bar on our last evening. The bar man was nice and friendly. The bar room was a little odd and resembled a chapel or such like.
We were surprised at just how many people there were and how many shops remained open on Xmas day. This really is the town that does not sleep.
Our only regret was not having longer than 5 days but there is always next time.

Before we left we were worried about some of the negative reviews this hotel attracted. Well i am here to say they are all wrong and this hotel is a lovely place well located with staff that do care. The room was on the 10th floor and was not one of the renovated rooms, nevertheless it was clean, with a large bathroom and a massive comfortable bed. There was a little traffic noise but thats New York and one of the wonders of our stay.
The hotel is right in the middle of everything with Times Square just a 5 minute walk away. You can see the Emipre State building from the room and you are graced by a number of diners on the main street.
Breakfast let the hotel down a little, $22 for cold meats and cheese but go across the road to Moonstruck and have the best 'Irish' breakfast for a lot less money.
Draw back is the wi-fi but to be fair America is already on 4G and its our phone roaming costs that are idiotic bearing in mind the technology available. Having said that there are plenty of free wi-fi connections about. Starbucks is a good one to mention.
Will we go again.... Yes
Would we stay here again... Yes
Would i recommend it to you ... Yes
If you want posh stay at the Waldorf Astoria. Otherwise you get what you pay for.

Room Tip: The higher you go the better the room.

If you want Scandinavian chic, this isn't it; If you want smart American 'Have a nice day service and smiles' , this isn't for you either. If you want reception staff who don't like being bothered by customers, untidy conciege staff who appear out of no-where at tips time , and a room which smells like an old-people's home , then you just hit gold. A classic case of senior management ignoring their staff, so why wouldn't staff ignore their customers?
Brilliant location and cheap but definitely not cheerful.

Smallish room, but a queen for $109 in New York is unbeatable. Very nice bathroom, comfortable bed, great location near midtown and Fifth Avenue. Helpful staff held our bags for a few hours after checkout.
Only downside--paid Wifi Internet. I understand the rates are low, but you'd think in this day and age, in New York, you wouldn't have to pay for Wifi. And even worse--it's per device, not per room or account.
Oh well. For $109, you can't ask more. Overall, very satisfied, with just that one inconvenience.

Room Tip: Higher seems to be quieter. We were on the 11th floor and didn't hear anything, even on a raucou...

We arrived on Feb 18 2012. The staff at the desk accomodated us at 1030am and allowed us to valet park our car and lock our luggage until we could check in later in the day. The gentleman storing our luggage was very friendly. We then came back and had a smooth check in process. Our room was on the 11 floor. the room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was newly remodeled and clean. there were no bed bugs. after reading all the mixed reviews, I was a bit concerned but I would stay there again. It is in a great location, clean, the price is right. The moonstruck dinner across the street has a great breakfast for 8 dollars! There is lots to do in walking distance. Again nothing fancy but clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: ask for the newly renovated rooms.
