“First time to NYC”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2012

We have just returned from NYC, stayed at The Hampton Inn North for 7 nights. On arrival the hotel receptionist greeted us with a smile and a welcome. She asked us which room we would like. We opted for the top floor on 8th Avenue. The room was very spacious, huge bed and lovely and clean. Bathroom was really good, excellent hair-dryer. Cannot fault the room at all. Free safe in the room too. The bed was lovely and comfortable, slept well all week, even though you could hear the noise of the refuse collection lorries in the middle of the night, no problem really. Lots of emergency sirens also! I suppose its what you would expect in New York. Breakfast is included, we arrived early first morning around 7 am. A few people there but not busy. There is a sign outside the breakfast room stating how busy it can get and at what time, so you are in no doubt about it. Breakfast is quite good, with choice of cereal, fruit juice, porridge, hot food, muffins, pastries, toast, waffles etc..Free tea, coffee & hot chocolate 24hrs in the lobby. The location of this hotel is great, just around the corner from Broadway & Times Square. We walked everywhere as it was so much easier and quicker than buses and tubes, although we took the tube to the Staten Island Ferry, which is free.
The hotel provided us with a map of the city which was a great help, much better than the small maps in our guide books, and not at all bulky or heavy. I would definitely return to this hotel. Thank you Hampton Inn, for a memorable 1st time visit to NYC.

Room Tip: Ask the reception which room they would recommend, I have only stayed in one room which was lovely...

Stayed here in Dec 2008 and 2009 for 1 week with mam and auntie. Lovely hotel, very warm , nice decor , nice staff. Safe in the room. Buffet breakfast was included for free and this set us up for the day with a variety to choose from, (can get busy from 8am-900am). Free hot chocolate, coffee, tea etc 24 hours. About 10 min walk to Macys , 5 mins to times Square and 5 mins south of Central Park. Good location. It was a little dearer than some of the hotels however it is a nicer hotel, so you get what you pay for.

We recently returned from a 4-night stay here and if I return anytime soon I'd book this hotel in a minute. The location is ideal - within walking distance of Times Square, the theatres, Rockefeller Plaza, and some great hidden restaurant gems in Hell's Kitchen. For locations further away, the subway station is a short block away. Check in was a breeze and the front desk staff was very helpful in providing key information and maps.

The rooms are a little larger than what you would normally expect in New York, but the hotel itself is a little older. What I REALLY like about this place is that it's small enough that you don't have long waits for elevators and you don't feel like your battling crowds all of the time just to get into and out of the hotel (compared to some of the gargantuan hotels directly on Times Square). We had a room on the 8th floor that faced the Hudson river and heard little to no noise at all from the surrounding area.

The only area that could be improved (and this seems to be a constant among the other reviews) is the breakfast. If you want to ensure a hot breakfast and not have to wait for a table or take it back to your room, get there early. We arrived around 9:00 one morning and easily had a 10-15 minute wait in line. At that point, some of the selections were cold and frankly just mediocre in quality. If Hampton could improve on this one facet of the experience, they would have a winner.

Check out was equally easy and the bellman that morning had such a great attitude and secured our airport transportation with a laugh and a smile.

The hotel is good but don't expect anything luxurious.

The rooms are clean and pretty big for NYC standards. The location (8th av. and 51st str.) is great, close to Times Square and the theater area, Central Park, 5th Av. If you are with kids, you have the Disney Store and Toys R Us within walking distance.

The complimentary wi-fi worked excellent.

On the other hand, the breakfast is horrible. They really can do better. I have stayed in much cheaper hotels which offered a much better breakfast.

the rooms are nice and clean. We had a room to the 8th Avenue but the windows was so dirty that we cleaned it on our own. The pros in the hotel is definitely the location, the cost performance ratio, the coffee and tea station in the lobby, the free wireless accees. The cons were that you need to be early for breakfast otherwise it can get crowded. I see that the breakfast itself is rated very positively by other guests and have to second that its a very clean and nice room and I also liked that there were fresh fruits offered, I guess if you are used to european and asian hotel breakfast you should be prepared that you get a typical US breakfast with focus on waffles and cornflakes. I did not like the small and flexible plastic knifes and forks. I was personally disappointed that I as Hilton Diamond member did just get a single one small bottle of water and some peanuts only on the first day and that was all as amenities for me. Late check out was also not possible for me and the way of communication was very US style means they tell you a couple of times that they love you and strive to be the best but I as a european don´t feel that they take me serious with the little request I have had.

Room Tip: view to the 8th avenue is better that the other side
