“Excellent hotel, best I've stayed in, in New York”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2012 via mobile

Had a great stay in the holiday inn, I honestly don't know what people are moaning about. I don't usually write reviews, but I felt this place needed someone to stick up for it! I'm a seasoned visitor to new York, and have stayed in many different hotels all over the city. And this has to be the best. My room was spotless, the carpets where brand new, room was cleaned daily. Free news paper every morning. I'm back in New York in September and will definatly be staying here again.

Room size was reasonable considering its New York City. Location was good - in a less busy part of 57th stress but easy access to subway. Chose the hotel because it's close to central park. Free wi-fi.

Customer service could be improved. Doormen, concierge appeared distant - did not seem eager to offer services. Was expecting a flat screen TV, only to see a 20 year old TV in the room. Channels were rather limited. No fridge in the room.

This wasn't a bad hotel but it's an older hotel. There was definite wear and tear on the wallpaper, rust around vents and the bathroom was a little small. The bathroom was dark but there were grout stains and the toilet had a long lever that you'd see in a public restroom. Kind of odd. Also the only way to warm up the room was to turn off the AC and crack the window.

The good was that the room itself was sizable and the bed was comfortable. The sheets were clean and the towels were decent. This hotel is also right by Central Park. They also leave out bowls of lifesaver mints at the check in desk.

The staff service was spotty. I believe the Pacific Islander guy was very nice but the other people were a little snooty and impatient.

Speaking of spotty, my Internet connection was mostly ok but not perfect. I stayed at the end of the six floor in the lower numbers.

I didn't get a chance to use any amenities. The gym was unfortunately not 24 hours and closed early on the weekend. The gift store had a good selection. I didn't try the restaurant.

We stayed for 6 nights at this second rate (should be 1 star) hotel thinking it being a holiday inn it would be of a good standard....so wrong!!! We arrived at the hotel at 10pm to be told that they had overbooked and didn't have the non smoking king room we booked available but could put us in a smoking double room with two single beds - after some pushing and explanation of my husbands severe asthma condition (to which they initially stated that the smell of smoke would only be minimal and residual from the previous guest!!) they stated they did have one king room available but it was not clean yet, gave us a drink voucher and asked us to wait - no problems....2 hours later at midnight our room was available.

NYC was going through a cold snap (we were there in Spring) and it was freezing (for us aussies anyway - 10 degrees during the day and even less at night), so we attempted to put the heater on however it only blew out cold air. Thinking there was something wrong with our heater we rang the front desk only to be told that the entire hotel is only heated during the winter months!!!! Seemed strange to us given that the hotel lobby was toasty warm! And not to mention in their hotel book supplied in our room it clearly stated that the heating/cooling was available. The concierge offered to send up some blankets and stated that we shouldnt worry because the weather was supposed to get better in the coming days (which it didnt!) - the blankets we received were thin doona covers!! No warmth did they add to our room!!!!!

on top of all of this, I unfortunately came down with a nasty ear infection and needed to see a doctor. Once again in the hotel book, it stated to see the front desk and they would point me in the right direction - wrong!!! The duty manager stated that I would need to go straight to emergency and that no doctor in the states would see me - she recommended some advil from the hotel gift shop if i didnt want to go to the ED!!! We googled doctors in the area instead and found there was a medical clinic on the same street as the hotel!

Lots of little issues - we asked where the nearest laundromat was and was given the wrong address and ended up carting bags of laundry around NYC asking random people where the nearest one was!

On the positive side, it is in a great location and the rooms are bigger than normal, just a shame about the unprofessional staff and heating!! Would never stay here again - ever!

oh and they have signs all through the hotel stating that if you arent happy with any part of your stay they will reimburse you - what a load of crap!!

its true the reviews i read about this hotel on trip advisor but i thought id give it the benefit of the doubt because the hotel we really wanted to stay in was booked for our time in new york......anyway back to this hotel we needed 2 rooms we had 6 people in our family so when we checked in they gave us 2 rooms on separate floors, when we asked to have rooms next to one another the best they could do was on the same floor but still separated so we took that offer up as it was 11pm and we just spent 15 hours on a plane and was exhausted.
so we go up to our room and our room and corridor smelled of ciggarette smoke i sprayed my room of perfume the room was clean and tidy same for the bathroom but no fridge no microwave cleaners came everyday did a great job supplied us with clean towels daily,
next morning went straight to reception to ask if we can be moved to another room that didnt seem to be a problem and finally we got a connecting room for the whole family without the pong which was great but we shared our room with a mouse which my husband and daughter saw for their own eyes.
the bell boys and concierge, doormen, were all useless you ask them a question such as "do you no where the greyline office is? all you get is "no wouldnt have a clue" im like what the? you shouldnt be in this industry if you dont even no where your main tour operator is
when you walk into the hotel lobby the door men stand there like arnold swarzenegger staring at you making you feel not welcome especially after a 5 hour walk around newyork with a 7 year old and a 3 yr old we get into the lobby and stopped just by the stairs to look through our bag for the card to get into our room my 7 year old was so tired after our day out she went to sit on the steps to wait for me to find the card next minuite the door man approached her and said "excuse me can you get up off the stairs the bosses are here today!.
ive raved on enough here i havent even finished but im sure by now you get the jist of this honestly
DONT BOTHER!!!!!!!! GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
