Hotel Elysee by Library Hotel Collection
Ranked #9 of 469 Hotels in New York City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 June 2012

* The concierge, doormen, maids and lounge staff were all charming and helpful.
* The bedroom was spacious (yes!), immaculate, well lit and had plenty of storage space for our clothes. Our bedroom had a thermostat that we could control. The beds and pillows are very comfy too.
* The bathroom was spotless and the shower had good water pressure at any temperature.
* The lounge is elegant and comfortable. A classical music radio channel plays in the background and adds to the peaceful ambience.
* The breakfast, evening snacks and coffee/tea/fruit available all day meant that we always set off feeling well fed in the morning and could return to eat something replenishing in the afternoon before heading out for the evening.
* Monkey Bar serves delicious cocktails and felt like stepping back into a beautiful bygone era.
* The hotel is perfectly located in Midtown, two blocks from St Patrick's, MoMA and Rockefeller (brilliant view at day and night), v. close to Central Park and within a very reasonable walking distance of the Frick and Met museums.
* The concierge helped us contact our airline when our return flight was changed. They also recommended excellent restaurants on two occasions.

Thank you Elysee for helping to make our stay in NYC so enjoyable! See you again soon!

Room Tip: Higher rooms have less A/C unit noise. Rooms at the back of the hotel are quieter.

Our second stay at the Elysee was as good as the first, one year ago. It is a wonderful little boutique hotel, located near many attractions. It is an easy walk to the MOMA, Times Square, Central Park, Grand Central Terminal. The hotel staff are helpful and professional. Their lounge for guests features an amazing breakfast, a late afternoon wine/cheese reception, comfy couches, and the most polite and efficient attending staff. It remains open for coffee/tea and cookies all day long. Slipping into the wonderful clean white sheets each night is heavenly. If you don['t like large highrise hotels that are fairly impersonal, the Elysee is for you.

Room Tip: Room 33 is one of their small suites, but features an enclosed terrace that is glassed in and bright...

It takes more than a few special things for me to have found a "hotel for life" for future trips to New York, but Hotel Elysée, a "boutique hotel" in midtown, has certainly won that distinction. They're much more than a 'cut above' every other impersonal hotel I've stayed in in NYC, and in one case that I'll describe below they provided a service that I'm sure NO other hotel in NYC would have done. (I have no association with the hotel other than now being a very satisfied customer.)

Of course the rooms must be a cut above. One of the most prized elements in a NYC hotel room is space -- there usually isn't much, but the suite I stayed in not only exceeded my expectations but actually delighted me. Not only was the bedroom and living room each large and inviting with "real" furniture, but there was a third room, a "sunroom" attached, which was an external private four-season enclosed large room with frosted glass ceiling and walls, comfortable furniture, and even a refrigerator. This is unprecedented in my NYC experiences and expanded even a nice hotel room into a wonderful spacious airy temporary home. (Of course the bathroom could have used more counter space, but I'm happy with the tradeoff.)

The hotel offers a lounge for all guests similar to the "concierge floor" in some hotels, with continental breakfast and afternoon snacks and wine, and cookies and similar 24/7. And unlike some hotels that refuse to recognize that some people like to make their own coffee in the morning without having to wait for room service, Elysée provides a coffee maker and all the accouterments on request. (They could improve this by replacing the traditional coffee maker with a Kureg and a selection of coffees, but I'm not complaining.)

And the staff seemed genuinely friendly. Not the forced smiles and civility that's usually the best you can hope for in a hotel, but truly pleasant and helpful. Yes, they provided some excellent restaurant suggestions and made the reservations, but here comes the truly outstanding service that they provided, without my asking for or expecting it(!), that guarantees they're my NYC destination for life:

When I drove into NY I was surprised to find a parade running down 5th avenue. Of course I had to cross 5th to get to the hotel, and this required that I and seemingly every other car in the city had to make a several-mile long loop up through Central Park, at about 2 MPH. At one point I rolled down the window to ask a policeman just where I could cross -- and the window would only close halfway. It was plain stuck, and of course there was rain forecast for the day of my return trip.

So when, tired and frustrated, I checked in, I asked Mike at the front desk if they might have some clear plastic sheeting and package sealing tape that I might use to cover the opening. Of course I knew this would likely be a poor fix at best for the hours-long trip home in the rain, but it was the best idea I had and there was no time to get the car to a local dealer.

Mike said he would have the Engineering department take a look at the car in the adjacent parking garage where they parked it. Their engineers, Adam and Jarek, met me at the car, tried the usual things to get the window unstuck, and when it still would not budge said:

"We'll cut you a piece of plexiglass to fit the opening and tape it in place."

And that's just what they did. Wow! Not the flimsy floppy sheet of plastic I'd planned that would probably have ripped at 60 MPH, but a hard piece of clear plexiglass cut EXACTLY to fit, carefully designed to be captured by the exposed part of the window glass and a feature on the door so that the wind could not get under it and rip it away at speed. And then they left a roll of tape that would not damage the car's paint for me to seal the tiny gap if the wind noise was too high. Wow!

And they did this without charge.

My thanks to Adam, Jarek, and Mike for providing an over-the-top, unasked for and unexpected exceptional service that made an incredible difference in the comfort and safety of my trip home, and to Hotel Elysée in general for providing a very welcome spacious and calming haven from the crowded and claustrophobic NYC norm.

I can not imagine any "typical" hotel so exceeding all my expectations, and that's why Hotel Elysée is certainly now "my" hotel for all future NYC trips.

Ideal location, great staff, comfortable room, breakfast in the morning and wine and cheese in the evening and free internet to top it off! What more can you ask?! Only negative is that the bathroom was small. Loved the Monkey Bar!

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room
