For many years, when I visited Manhattan, I stayed with my grandmother on the Upper East Side. She lived in a full floor, pre-war cooperative that was as elegant and gracious as it was comfortable and welcoming. She had a staff who managed her home, and doormen who knew every one of the relatives by name. And yes, I knew that I was spoiled. Eventually she sold her apartment and once that happened, I wondered if I could ever come close to recreating any piece of that experience.
I've stayed in dozens of hotels in the city since then, but never found exactly the right spot (at the right price) until now. The Hotel Elysee is it -- a hidden gem tucked into the heart of the city. The warm and personable staff; gracious and well appointed rooms; and thoughtful amenities all combine to create a special experience that mirrors that of my grandmother’s home.
Bedrooms are very well appointed and immaculate, with triple sheeted beds and fluffy comforters. The small touches, like complimentary Belgian chocolate bars and bottled water, full-sized ironing boards and irons, and free Internet are just some of the niceties. (By the way, the number of amenities that are included in the price of the room is staggering and easily saves you $100 in additional costs over a two-night stay.)
There are wonderful nooks and crannies throughout the building, but we especially liked the library, with its overstuffed, comfortable couches and clubby atmosphere. This is the heart and soul of the hotel, where guests gather throughout the day to either enjoy the bountiful breakfast, dig into the bowl of fresh fruit, or sample the wine (red, white, and sparkling) that is accompanied by platters of cheese, veggies, and bowls of nuts. We were so full one evening after our wine and cheese tasting that we didn’t even bother to go out for dinner. However, if we had wanted to, we could have just slipped downstairs to the famous Monkey Bar or across the street to Cellini, a local favorite that serves great Italian food.
Finally, while we liked the classic, understated, and elegant feeling of the building and its spaces, it was the staff who really made the difference. They recognize what goes into creating a great client experience and deliver in all categories. Because of this, The Hotel Elysee is now the only place that we’ll consider staying at when visiting Manhattan.
