“Great hotel on the Upper West Side”
Reviewed 26 July 2012

We stayed 6 nights in the Hotel Beacon last June. The location is excellent, right on Broadway, with easy access to the 72nd St. Subway about one block away. We stayed in a room with kitchenette. It is very complete, clean and relatively spacious for NY standards. We had a 1 bedroom suite with a king bed and a living room with sofabed. Great for a small family. There is a supermarket across the street where you can buy everything and it is practical to be able to eat some meals in the room. The hotel offers no restaurant, but there is a Coffee Shop and Diner just next to it, and lots of restaurants and shops in the vicinity. Really nice neighborhood all around. The Beacon Theatre is just next door, so it is fantastic if you want to see a concert. Lincon Center is one subway stop away. Central Park is about 3 long blocks by foot. We moved all over Manhattan from this location without a problem. I've stayed in NY before in the Times Square area, and this is much nicer and quieter.

Great hotel, wouldn't hesitate to book here again.

very clean nice and comfortable hotel in a great location, close to Central park and subway. the bathroom is a little small and doesn't have a fan so mirror kept fogging up. other than that I thought it was a very nice place to stay and bed was very comfy. Nice restaurant right next door, and across the street is fairways market and there is a Starbucks close by also. Was very happy with my stay here.

My wife and I were planning a trip to New York for our 10th anniversary, and there was no doubt where we would stay -- Hotel Beacon. Great location on the Upper West Side. Near Central Park, Natural History Museum, the 72nd Street subway, Fairway Market across the street, you can't beat it. Room was clean and spacious, K bed with living room, kitchenette. Service is excellent across the board. Felt like we were really living there, not just visiting. If you're searching for a place to stay in NYC, stop searching. Stay here, you won't be disappointed.

And check out Shake Shack at 79th and Columbus for great burgers and shakes.

I stayed at the Beacon several years ago and then for four nights recently. They have remodeled and done a fine job. We had a one-bedroom king suite on an upper floor.

Here are pluses, minuses, and general FYI:

Pluses:

Quiet rooms.
Location (see other reviews for more on this)
Comfortable beds and pillows
Excellent televisions
Our room had three good-sized closets with plenty of hangers
Plenty of storage in drawers. Be careful if you have black items, since the drawers are also black
Free wi-fi
Small bathroom, but good water pressure
Looks like they have plenty of umbrellas to lend, though we didn't need one

Cons:

No bathroom downstairs - under construction

Only two elevators working, and rather slow - the third was under construction

No outlets available in bedroom (they were just too inaccessible), so anything that needed to be plugged in (phone charger and such) had to be used in the living room.

Keurig coffeemaker - not a favorite (but there's a Starbucks across the street and plenty of other coffee options nearby).

Minimally stocked kitchenette, as far as utensils. There is cutlery, a bottle opener, and cutting board, but no knife usable to cut fruit, salami, etc. There's not exactly a place to eat, but we were fine sitting on the sofa and using the coffee table.

Air conditioning a bit fiddly - maybe there was a way to stop it cycling off and on all night but we just lived with it.

-----
The housekeeping staff was very friendly; the front desk people were fine. Late check-out requested and they gave us an extra half-hour.

They stored our luggage for several hours - looks like many people do that. There was a large room filled with luggage.

No fitness facility, but there's one down the street with a $20 day pass charge. We didn't use it.

-------
I would return to the Beacon and would recommend it.

Room Tip: Our room on the upper floor faced east towards the park. Nice views. We appreciated the blinds blo...

We stayed in a one bedroom suite with a living room and a full kitchen. There was lots of space (especially by New York standards) and two TV sets. The room could easily have accommodated an extra person or two in the living room. Everything was clean and featured the expected amenities. Housekeeping staff were friendly and willing to help. The lobby of the hotel is not large. We arrived a few minutes before the 3PM check in time and had to wait with others until that time . Fortunately there is a very nice grocery store right across the street and a Starbucks next door. Unfortunately, the Beacon Theater is on the other side and one night of our 3 night stay there was a rock band that was very loud. We could hear the band playing and the audience shrieking then we heard the stage being disassembled until at least 2 in the morning. You may want to check the performance schedule before booking a room. Getting around from that part of town was easy. Columbus Circle is nearby and the 72nd St subway station is very close. There is no need for a rental car and it was convenient to walk in Central Park and visit Riverside Park. It was fun to hear so many languages spoken by the many international guests and I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Request a room on a lower floor so that you can take the stairs. The wait for an elevator was somet...
