We have stayed at the Excelsior several times and love coming back. The upper West side location is great: 3 minutes walk from Central Park and subway stations close by for downtown excursions.

The beds and linens are top notch. The bathrooms are stocked with fine soaps and shampoos. The think we liked about this hotel is that there are 1- and 2-bedroom suites which are perfect for large families like mine. I found the prices to be very reasonable for the value received.

Room Tip: 1- and 2-bedroom suites if you are traveling with your family.

The excelsior is in a prime location in New York only a 5 minute walk to the natural history museum, and close to some significant.

the staff at the excelsior are snooty and not one bit helpful hence the one star rating, I believe this hotel could be excellent it just needs the staff.

Also massively overpriced

An excellent hotel with a prime location. The fourth floor suite had everything we wanted and was very comfortable. The location is superb - W 81st Street, facing the Museum of Natural History and half a block from Central Park - the Metropolitan Museum is at the other side of the park, about 15 minsutes walk. Two subway lines are within a couple of blocks and the Lincoln Centre is walkable. There is a choice of alternative eateries on Columbus, should you wish.
Lynn and the front desk staff are very helpful, accomodating our early check-in and stewarding a mail-order package that arrived the previous week (a model loco, nothing naughty). The only quibble was the young concierge, who try to insist we should visit her choice of tourist spots, rather than helping with ours.

the location we found to be ideal close enough to subway station and central park . After the madness that is time square and penn station it was nice to come back to the tranquil area around central park ( by new york standards ). The staff were very friendly and helpful and we got upgraded to a small suite on the top floor. Didn't try breakfast there after previous reviews said it was expensive but there are plenty of options just 1 block behind the hotel we went to the Amsterdam diner which was cheap enough. Only problem was that the room was very hot and it took the a/c quite a while to cool it down so maybe a problem in the summer . we stayed in April . got a good price on On hotels. hope this helps

We spent a long Easter/Passover weekend here and overall were very satisfied. Our room was small, but well appointed and clean, with a great city view looking north through huge windows. The location is great, right across from the American Museum of Natural History and Central Park. Subway and bus stops are conveniently near so we were able to use the hotel as home base to go anywhere we wanted to go in the city. The Excelsior is just around the corner from Columbus Ave. and a block from Amsterdam so easy access to shopping and a wide variety of interesting restaurants. The only downside is that the hotel is quite pricey for the size of the rooms - $650 with fees seems a bit steep for 2 nights, but we recognize that when in NYC you need to expect NYC prices. Overall a great hotel experience.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north side have sweeping views.
