I have always loved this hotel -- in good times and bad, pre-renovation and post. It is the best location in the city for an out of towner with a packed agenda and in its current iteration is cozy, comfortable and very cool. A great place for a winter visit. Fireplaces and rich, dark colors.
The real mark of a great hotel in my book, however, is how well the staff manages when things don't go well. We spent a few days there over the New Year's Weekend and had a few bumps. There was an electronic glitch that made the door locks malfunction briefly and some room service confusion -- actually quite minor in the scheme of things. The hotel staff could not have been kinder or more efficient in cleaning up problems and at check-out they had preemptively comped a number of items on our bill. This was followed by a letter from the General Manager to explain again and apologize for the inconvenience. This is the kind of gesture that inspires loyalty. Things happen in the best of hotels but the response really is what makes the difference and keeps customers coming back. These are prices one would expect in a top tier Manhattan hotel but I think the value is quite high. I absolutely recommend it and can't think of anywhere I would rather stay in NY right now.More
