One of our guilty little pleasures is to have dinner at Tse Yang, an upscale Chinese restaurant that we frequent with every trip we make to New York.

The outstanding service and pricey meals never disappoint, and it is fun to splurge now and then. Appetizers, 3 drinks, two meals, fried rice and dessert set us back $179 with tip but we would go again on our next trip.

THE LOCATION: Fairly good midtown East location (on 51st, between Park and Madison Ave; 1.5 blocks from 5th Ave, 1.5 blocks from M subway Lexington Station; next door to the New York Palace hotel).

THE RESTAURANT: Spacious restaurant for NY standard. Traditional Chinese decor with fish tanks/aquarium served as sections for the restaurant. The lighting is somewhat dim to provide a more intimate dining experience with traditional chinese instrumental musics in the background.

THE SERVICE: Excellent service. Everyone is extremely friendly and attentive. They are very accommodating of young kids.

THE FOOD: Subpar quality. The portion is small. The taste is not of true Chinese authenticity (the dishes that we ordered). We had much better and more authentic Chinese foods that cost 3 times less at other places a few blocks away.

THE PRICE: Overpriced for quality. For example, Schezuan beef (consists of shredded beef and some shreeded vegetable, small portion)=$29.50; small cup of Sharkfin soup (that has more chicken and other maskins ingedients than sharkfin itself)=$22. However, they do have Chinese dinner (multiple dishes-about 4 or so, served family style) at $50 per person. I can only imagine the portion would also be tiny. Can't comment on this since we didn't try it.

CONCLUSION: Is a family/kids friendly restaurant. Spacious enough to push the strollers to your designated table. Relax and casual enough for a quick lunch or dinner.

My husband spoils me, so knowing how much I love Chinese food, we went to Tse Yang on our last business trip to New York. We have also been to their sister location, in Geneva, Switzerland, which is more formal and European, although equally as opulent, and delicious. The NYC Tse Yang is a real throwback to the old tradition of serving spectacular food in a convivial relaxed setting. You sort of expect the Rat Pack to walk in the door at any minute! The room is lovely, decorated in rich burgundies and gold and in real Chinese style. We liked it so much here, we went twice. We enjoyed the duck, the beef, the seafood, all of it first class and super fresh. Even though it's in the heart of New York City (next door to the NY Palace Hotel on 51st St.) it's still has a very homey, family atmosphere. Don't miss your cocktail at the bar, expertly made by Louis, the wonderful bar keep. Locals come here for drinks after work, sort of like a Cheers, so you might end up having a few before dinner, it's so entertaining! When we return to New York (and to Geneva) we will make Tse Yang one of our first stops!

Just don't go - this is a place that can't possibly survive. Very expensive for food that was no better than a cheap take out - very very very poor - it's very sad to see a place in this kind of shape.
