had dinner and lunch at the Hakubai and was very impressed by the quality of the food and friendliness of the service. The Hakubai Bento for lunch was delicious.

There were nine of us for a family dinner at Hakubai. We chose this restaurant not only for the Japanese food but also for convenience for some elderly relatives. We were staying at the Kitano hotel where Hakubai is located. Because of our large group we pre-ordered 2days beforehand. Six of us ordered the Okonomi kaiseki and three ordered à la carte partly because the latter were were not fond of sashimi which was included in the kaiseki. The Okonomi kaiseki was presented exquisitely. The steak and sushi main courses were very good. But the soba with shrimp tempura course was not that great. Our à la carte tempura was also pretty disappointing. The à la carte broiled black cod, on the other hand, was excellent. We also ordered rice, miso soup, salad and ohitashi (spinach boiled in dashi stock) to go with the à la carte entrées. Probably because we had pre-ordered, service was prompt. It was very competent and friendly. Our kimono-clad waitress explained each kaiseki course as it was presented. Our party had a wonderful time at Hakubai and look forward to coming back. It was the highlight of our mini-Japanese vacation in NYC.

A truly special dining experience for anyone who appreciates fine Japanese cuisine.
It comes with its price, as it does at this level of New York City dining.
Arrive hungry and in the mood to be chill. Not what I would suggest for a quick bite.
The kind of meal you'll want to photograph, course by course, even if you're not the sort who likes to see others' cooking/dining photos.
Enjoy.

Hakubai Japanese restaurant is located on the basement floor of the Kitano Hotel in NYC. It is a fine dining Japanese restaurant that offers different Kaiseki menus (all quite expensive). The sushi and sashimi are fresh, and the misoyaki butterfish (black cod) is excellent. Expect to pay at least $100 per person to dine there. Service was good.
