“A nice place to stay”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2012

I stayed at Morningside Inn during Christmas time. Of course the rates are higher in this season, but the manager (Patrick) was kind enough to make some arrangements for me to stay in a room with a bathroom for a slightly lower cost since I was travelling with my underage niece. He is a very nice person. Denise, the night-shift receptionist, is also nice, friendly and polite. Very different from one of the morning-shift receptionists, the brunette one, who is extremelly unfriendly and impolite. The cleaning girls are also nice.
The hotel is average. Bad points: internet access only at the lobby - which gets pretty crowded when many guests want to go online... - no breakfast (but it seems they're starting having it soon), the heating system is not very efficient, the stove in the kitchen on my floor was not working. Good points: Most os the staff is nice, the rooms are kind of small but comfortable (mattresses a little noisy...), cable tv, well located (near grocery stores, general stores, central park and subway station). Overall, a good hotel. Maybe the rates could be a little lower. I recommend it.

First of all the staff here are just amazing! We were worried due to the lack of email responses however apon arrival we had a great South African lady help us out. With no surprise due to the lack of emails our booking had been messed up but she was able to fix the solution (which doesn't happen a lot we've noticed). Even all the maids are lovely and helpful.
- Transport - good heaps of local train stations at $2.25 per trip
- Locations - Its cheap so ok but further south (downtown was nicer)
- Staff - Fantastic
- Rooms - Preferably get the upgraded rooms with ensuits.. alot better (we stayed in both)
- WIFI - Doesn't actually reach your room you have to sit on the floor in the lobby
- 2nd Floor - DO NOT STAY ON THIS FLOOR - everyone shares a bathroom and forgets that the doors slam.. so all night you are woken up to banging and stupid girls giggling. 4th floor was fine...

Room Tip: 2nd floor is terrible. All the doors bang all night when everyone goes to the shared bathroom... mus...

We were in New York for New Years eve so it was very pricey not matter where we went.
If you want to email them a question... DONt Bother.. they never got back to me.. There was a big muddle up with my booking and it was very frustrating.

There was a beautiful south African lady at reception. She upgraded us she was very approachable! as was the other lady! The men.. (im not sexist!) but dnt bother... they dont care about customers only about gtting a break to watch the telly!!

Rooms- Dont expect clean just expect basic. (perfect for what we needed)
Subway - Very close by.. Try get off on the 110th 1 line not the one further away... its a lil more dodgy.
Location: OK not super safe but stay on the main roads u will be fine
WALKING: It took us about 1 hr to wak into time square.. Straight down broadway.
Breakfast-NOT INCLUDED
Kitchen- Staff forgot to tell us there is full kitchen facilities on site!!

All in all.. Its good for a budget travelller.. Wouldnt rave about it nor reccommend it.

The hotel is centrally located, with underground stations close by. Plenty of eating places within walking distance.
Room quality is not great. We opted for a double room. The bed was comfortable but the room was not very clean. The carpet was stained, bathroom not mopped and cleaned thoroughly everyday. I had dropped a few hairs on the bathroom floor and they stayed there for 4 days.
Hotel quality can be improved. Staff is friendly and approachable.

Was already familiar with the neighborhood (as familiar as one can be with NYC after 4 years away), so I knew this was where I wanted to stay. Very limited lodging options in this neck of the woods, but I fully recommend it to get a true local experience. No sign out front in this quiet (again, relative), residential street. As others have noted, a safe area, but don't be careless. Clean and basic, felt like a dormitory almost. Myself and two buddies got a standard triple room with one full and one single bed. Tight quarters for 3 grown men, but it wasn't awful. Reasonable closet space, dresser, fridge, small tv hanging from the ceiling. Fresh towels and soap daily, beds made up. Did not have a private bath, but rarely had to wait to use the one on our floor. Kitchen wasn't really stocked with anything, but if you were staying a while and got your own stuff, it would really help. We just got some snacks from the West Side Market, a quintessentially New York local grocer. Grab the house special at the Hungarian Coffee Shop around the corner to start your day off right. Bedding is basic, but adequate. I can't imagine how some of these bed divas would have survived in earlier eras. The three of us thought they were fine. No noise issues. Easy access to the 1 train, which can get you just about anywhere. Unless you have physical limitations or deep pockets, don't bother with cabs. The system is easy to learn, cheap, reliable, quick, and provides great people-watching.
Internet was only available in the little sitting area next to the front desk, but free and clear. I emailed the property with some questions a few days before going and never got a response. They may have been offended that I used the term 'hostel.' My bad.
I think there was one other negative, but I forget what it was. I work in a 5-star joint, so I had to seriously adjust my expectations, but what I found was a great value in a great spot in NYC. With the same budget, it's where I'd stay again.

Tip: don't ignore the local sites. The Cathedral of St. John the Divine is breathtaking, as is Riverside Church. Grant's Tomb, Harlem's main drag, the northern wilds of Central Park, and Columbia University are all walkable and worth the time.
