The gratuity of the Staten Island Ferry brings really lot of people. I guess we where almost 300 persons on this ferry. But it was great for me to be in open space, in the middle of water, after days of walking between buildings. Also a good spot for seeing the Statue of Liberty without spending hours queuing for take a ferry, queuing for looking her from the base and even more for climbing on her.
Once on Staten Island there are also lot of things to do.

Yeah it is free so the ferry itself is a bit tired but you get great views of Liberty, Manhattan skyline, Jersey City and the islands so a really good option and convenient

The Staten Island Ferry is a true attraction in itself and a surprising way to benefit from a FREE harbour cruise and sightseeing on a visit to New York. The 25 minute ride from Lower Manhattan to Staten Island (and the other 25 minutes for the return trip) do not require tickets and provide you with stunning views of amongst others, the Statue of Liberty, NY harbour and Manhattan skyline, and the New Jersey coast.
This is a must do free activity of about an hour while in New York.

A must-do item, the Staten Island Ferry offers you lovely views of the Statue of Liberty and gives you a nice peek into the "busyness" of the New Yorker.

This is the least expensive, most fun way to see the lower Manhattan skyline (day or night) and Statue of Liberty. Went with the grandkids (4 and 6 y/o) and they loved it! So did we!

A free service...almost shocking that I'm typing FREE SERVICE for anything in New York. It is an easy harbor hop with wonderful views if you don't have the time or patience for the Lady Liberty & Ellis Island tours. The Staten Island Ferry is a people watchers paradise.

Less than an hour round trip with excellent views of the harbor and Statue of Liberty. Ferry leaves on the half hour. Easy subway access. Just don't go at rush hour when thousands of commuters are trying to get home.

It's a very nice trip accross the river to visit Staten Island, one of the Burroughs of New York City. You can see The Statue of Liberty very close...

Great experience on the Ferry every time I've visited New York. This is the cheapest way to see the Statute of Liberty. You get great photos! Be prepared for the wind if you go in a cooler month. Otherwise - enjoy!

Because the weather was turning bad the next day and we would not be able to take a tour to see the Statue of Liberty we took the Staten Island ferry to get at least a close look. It was a fun expereince and it was FREE,
