Best deal in NYC. Ride the Staten Island Ferry and get a great view of Manhatten, Brooklyn, and Jersey. It was super cold at the end of March, but in the summertime I am sure the view can't be beat as the ferry also gives you a great view of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. One note: everyone must depart the ferry on the other side. So plan to spend time on Staten Island or just re-enter and catch the next ferry back.

We walked on, rode across, then turned around and came back. A great way to spend an hour taking in the views of the New York City Skyline and the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Grab a seat and enjoy the trip. In a city known for things being expensive, this is the best deal around.

The ferry arrives promptly most of the time, and staff are very efficient in getting passengers on and off the ferry. The service is quick and, most importantly, free. Both ferry terminals are clean and easy to navigate, and even if you’re not getting off on the island, you can get a great view of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, both of which beautiful.

I can never get over the fact that this is free! Views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty are fantastic and the boats are so big you never have to wait for long. You'd have to be mad not to do this when in New York.

Great way to see the Statue of Liberty and you get to go on a ferry and it’s free!
That last part makes it even better in an age where typically you get nothing for nothing. The Staten Island ferry has an almost iconic status (in my head at least) so its worth doing for that reason alone but it’s refreshing to see a city providing a ‘free’ service for commuters and tourists. Locals will no doubt wonder about the point of going over to Staten Island and turning right round on the next ferry but if you’re visiting NYC and you have an hour to kill it beats standing in line to go up the Empire State Building. Remember they didn’t have to queue in An Affair to Remember or Sleepless in Seattle but chances are you will. Choose the Staten Island Ferry instead.
