“Perfect for a father-daughter trip”
Reviewed 11 April 2012

My husband took his daughter to New York City for a long weekend in order to celebrate her college graduation and he put me--his amateur travel agent--on assignment to find an affordable room, with two beds, in a trendy hotel with a great location. The Ace was all those things! They shared a bunk room, which was small, but very clean and well-equipped. They were pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the bunk bed mattresses were and how fabulous the shower (water pressure & quantity of hot water) was. Service was excellent (they needed help with printing boarding passes and a few other items) and my step-daughter loved the quirky signage and the fun lobby. This was the sixth hotel my husband has stayed in in the city and it was his favorite, winning out over some much more expensive properties. I hope to stay there with him in future.

Stayed in February in NYC at the Ace - reception staff were nice and attentive - room was good size but only with view into light-well... after reading other reviews that might have been a good choice as it was at least quiet. Room lighting was way too dark though and there was no option to turn it up so lost my socks somewhere and never found them again, strange.

The bathroom was good with nice toiletries. The room service was good also, if not slightly overpriced though. Location is great, walking distance to everything basically, near Empire State and Flatiron building.

Not sure if its was for me, so would probably not return, but still 4 stars as it was a good experience.

Room Tip: Get a room on high floor and ask for slightly larger room where possible as small room is definitely...

Food was great.
Foyer was happening,

I am really torn about my stay at the Ace Hotel. The lobby is spectacular, the service was courteous, the location convenient. The room itself was a nice size, the shower was outstanding and I really liked the bathroom products (shampoo, body wash). The room's decor was inviting and interesting; there was always something new to discover. It was an absolute pleasure in every way until bedtime. My husband and I stayed in room 523 and we had the most terrible night sleep. The mattress was the hardest, most unforgiving bed I have ever slept in. We both ended up sleeping about two hours solid because we were tossing and turning so much. As we were in the city for work the next morning, it was extremely frustrating laying awake knowing that we were going to exhausted the next day. I am aware that the firmness of a mattress is a subjective thing, but I can't imagine that the average person would enjoying sleeping on a bed that hard. It seems as though the Ace Hotel spent too much time developing the aesthetic and brand of their establishment and forgot their most basic purpose: to provide a comfortable place for people to sleep.

I would love to go back to the Ace Hotel, but I'm not sure that I would because of my poor night sleep.

Room Tip: Don't stay in room 523. The bed is terrible.

We stayed 7 nights at the ace hotel as part of a holiday to the US. The ace certainly is a hip and cool hotel and we delighted at the decor/vinyl/turntable etc.

Overall we had a relatively good time at the ace however theres a few issues that really did put a dampner on our stay and changed our opinion from a hotel we would recomend to others to one that we would recomend against:
* Beware that the ace refuses to allow payment using VISA travelmoney prepaid USD$ cards to pay even though there was no issue with this type of visa card at and of the 7 other hotels we stayed at during our trip.
* Beware that the ace has become a haven for digital nomads after getting written up on a few websites as a cooler place to get free wireless than starbucks and its near impossible for a hotel guest to get a seat in the lounge or bar - the lounge and bar is litterally full with about 150 people jacked into their macbooks. - do some googling to find out some of the history as to how ace has tried to and lost the battle to control the digital nomads use of thr lounge - at the expense (and subsidised by) the hotels guests
* Beware that the Ace is essentially an older hotel that has been hipsterised - the rooms are not well soundproofed at all so your sleep will be interupted pretty consistantly between 3am and 4 am every night when the rubbish trucks come/at 4am when the drunks come out of the breslin downstairs.

Overall had we not had these issues or had the issues been better handled by the Ace staff then i would probably be here recommending the place however all of the above left us with a particularly sour taste - perhaps we're not quite hip enough?

Room Tip: Rooms facing the road are not well soundproofed - however ive heard the rooms facing the courtyard a...

Thank you for your feedback to4st. I certainly wish we had had the chance to speak while you were here. It is currently the policy of the Ace Hotel to not accept prepaid travel cards, but this is something I will be bringing to our controller, in order to make sure this is something that we still want to do. We have a lot of travelers from all over the world and if we can better assist our guests while they travel, we certainly will make every effort to do so. We’re sorry if you felt at all out of place here. No matter what the press says about being hip, we are a busy New York City hotel and in order stay that way, we make sure that our guests come first. We have many different guests in our building constantly, and we always strive to be welcoming and accommodating. While our lobby is a public space, we do have a section that is reserved for hotel guests only – this space was created due to guest feedback, and if this space is not large enough, perhaps your feedback is the beginning of its expansion.
If you were unhappy in your room due to any sort of noise we could have shown you other rooms on higher floors, or rooms that did not face the street.

We’d love to have you back and show you the kind of stay that YOU want. Please contact me at sean.walsh@acehotel.com, I’d love to discuss what we can do for your future stays.
