“Like living in New York...”
Reviewed 28 November 2011

I am so glad we decided to stay at Upper Yorkville Suites instead of a hotel when we visited Manhattan. This area is near Harlem and the upper east side. You are a short walk from Central Park and all the museums. 5th Avenue is almost around the corner.
It was so easy to travel from this area because the Subway entrance was literally just down the block. We felt as if we were really living like New Yorkers because of the atmosphere of this area. We enjoyed it so much more than a hotel.
The innkeepers are very nice and helpful. The rooms are so pretty and even though we were right on the front of the establishment, it wasn't noisy at night. We had no problem sleeping! I would definitely recommend Upper Yorkville Suites if you want to get the feel of what it's really like to live in NYC!

I booked Upper Yorkville Suites hoping to get out of the hustle and bustle of Times Square and to save money. It delivered on both aspects.

There were four of us traveling together on a girls mother daughter trip. When we first arrived, I wasn't sure about the neighborhood. I read other reviews that had mentioned the same. It is in the Spanish Harlem neighborhood. However, I never felt nervous. In fact, we hopped on the subway at 4:30 am the last day to get back to the airport and though there were a few people on the corner that would have made me nervous had I been by myself, I felt fine with four of us.

The room was bigger than any hotel I've ever stayed in. There are steep stairs getting to the room which was fine for us but if you have trouble navigating suitcases it might not work. There is no elevator service in the building but if there had been, we would have never used it anyway. The room slept four very comfortably though two of us were on a pull out couch bed. However, the couch bed was more comfortable than I expected. A very light breakfast of packaged oatmeal and cold cereal was provided and with the fruit and yogurt parfaits we bought at the McDonalds next door every morning, the breakfast was perfect for us.

The room was clean. A small stocked kitchen was available though we weren't in our room that often to use it. It was nice to have a refrigerator and there is a store across the street to buy snacks, drinks and food.

The subway line is just around the corner. We ran every morning in Central Park and it is within walking distance of the Museum Mile. We were able to navigate the subway well and took it everywhere.

If you want a nice, quiet place to go back to after the hustle and bustle of the city, I would highly recommend this place. There is no concierge service or other hotel services so you have to be confident about navigating the city on your own. Might not be the best for first time visitors but I would stay here again. I loved the quiet. I've stayed in Times Square before and I liked this better.

Stayed here for 8 nights, 3 adults and it was extremely clean comfortable and within easy reach of the subway, 1 block. The owners, Bob and David were very helpful and very accommodating. Each day the apartment was cleaned, beds made and dishes washed. Rosie the maid even offered to do our laundry which we paid her of course. She was wonderful. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Stayed in the York suite which does not face 3rd avenue, no noise.

We stayed based for a week at the Upper Yorkville suites as an alternative to a typical big name Manhattan hotel. (Couple, plus teenager). Our apartment was on the second floor, absolutely spotless, modern and while not super-chic it was well appointed ( free fast WiFi, large-screen TVs etc). The building contains three or four independent apartments each with own front door. The location is where real New Yorkers which made the trip far more interesting.

The innkeepers actually run a hardware store below so were always accessible, but after 1 day, we started to feel that this really was a comfortable home from home. All amenities were right on the doorstep as stated in the other reviews, so we wasted no time in stocking up for snacks, fresh fruit etc, even though soft drinks, breakfast cereals and milk are supplied every day by the housemaid.

On checking out leaving, the innkeepers kept our luggage safely all day and in the afternoon we could freshen up before the ordered taxi arrived.

The only slight minus point are the two aircon units, one at each end of the apartment. The are both really effective in keeping the apartment cool during the August heatwave, but were a bit louder than one might expect.

Overall we can really recommend this place if you want a clean, easy, safe and convenient B&B experience in NYC. The photos on their website are accurate and true. We will certainly be back, for sure. Drop into the East Harlem café for breakfast and check out Pee Dee steakhouse and Amor Cubano for dinners (nr 110th St)

Room Tip: There is no lifts, and all except one bedroom faces the main 3rd Avenue

We stayed in a one bedroom apartment which was super clean and very modern. There was plenty of space for us (2 adults, 2 kids). Although the area looks a little dodgy, the people were friendly and just going about their business. It was a short walk to the subway, which we took everywhere, and we felt very safe, even coming back from the subway at 11pm at night. The guys who run the place are helpful and friendly, there's a supermarket close by, Dunkin Donuts downstairs (with great breakfast bagels!) and a fruit stand across the street which is open for business into the wee hours of the morning! Plus, you are only about 10 minutes walk to the Museum of the City of New York and Central Park. We were even lucky enough to catch a couple of local baseball games at the ball fields in Central Park right at the entrance nearest us! Great apartment, great location, great value.
