Owner description: The Tenement Museum preserves the history of immigration through the personal accounts of those who built lives in the Lower East Side. Visitors can view restored apartments from the 19th and 20th centuries, walk the historic neighborhood, and interact with residents to learn the stories of generations of immigrants who helped shape the American experience. The museum is available by guided tour only. Each tour focuses on a specific theme and takes visitors to different areas of our two historic tenement buildings or neighborhood.

We did the "Hard Times" tour of the restored tenement as well as the outdoor walking tour (I think is was the "Then and Now" tour).
Both were fantastic, but if you are pushed for time/money, I would just do the indoor one. We had a great tour leader(Darryl?) who was a real history buff.
We hadn't originally planned on going there, but so glad we did. Very well run , great tours.

I love this museum and always recommend it to friends who visit New York. It really gives you an idea about the living conditions of so many of our ancestors who immigrated and found this area as their first home in America.

very interesting museum to see; something different and a good peak at what it was like in NYC at the turn of the 20th century but my apartment is still that small and the costs are 1000% more .. well worth a visit.

One of the best history experiences I've ever had. The restoration of the location and the format of the guided tour really made history come alive. Suitable for all ages. Should be on everyone's "must see" list on New York activities.
