What a great way to spend a half day! Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, experienced and fun! We booked this kayaking tour with little expectations as there were not many reviews and not much on their website. This was worth EVERY penny. The guide went out of her way to make sure we saw manatees. Our group was small and intimate which gave us the opportunity to ask plenty of questions and go a little further than normal. We not only saw manatees, but alligators, dolphins and a variety of birds and spiders! The meeting spot for this trip is a bit out of the way, but it is not a bad drive from Orlando and well worth the time. Make sure to follow the directions they send you when you book your trip...if not, you may not end up anywhere near the refuge. The kayaking trip is good for people of all ages. My family had a 65 year old and an 11 year old in the mix and they did great! Highly recommended and we will be doing it again when we return next year!

Did the Nighttime Bioluminescent Kayak Tour last year and it was one of the most unique and amazing experiences I have ever done. The Bioluminescence was so bright and prevalent everywhere you looked. There were SWARMS of Mullet (fish) swimming all around us in the little cove we paddled to creating a nighttime light show in the water that defied our expectations.

However, tried again this past weekend with friends this time thinking they would be amazed as I was last year, but the presence and visibility of the Bioluminescence in the water was so minuscule it truly didn't qualify as a 'Bioluminescence' kayak tour so much as just one of the other offered 'Moonlight Paddles'. Several of the participants could not even really discern the barely visible Bioluminescence. The moon was at less than 50% and partially obscured by clouds so the problem was not the amount of light, it was pretty black out there. There just wasn’t much presence of the Bioluminescent organisms this time around. And only a few individual fish jumping here or there throughout the excursion this time.

Overall it was a fun evening paddle and a different kind of activity that none of my friends had experienced, but very disappointing to them due to their expectations being much higher after hearing all the hype regarding my experience last year.
I concur with the other’s posts, the Mosquitoes at the kayak launch area where you must stand around for an hour or so before launching were the worst I have ever experienced. Highly recommend wearing light long pants and long sleeve shirt and then STILL dosing yourself in bug spray once you arrive there.

Also, you WILL get nearly soaking wet just from the water the dribbles down your paddle and drips onto you throughout the night. Bring a change of clothes or towel and leave in your car to use before the drive home.

We WILL give this another chance next year because last years experience was truly so amazing and perhaps this weekends poor experience was simply a bad, off night, but if you book this tour you must arrive with the right mindset. The Bioluminescence IS nature and so there are no guarantees. No one, including the Kayak company, can control or guarantee the presence or intensity of the Bioluminescence. You should arrive with the realization that although you are there for the Bioluminescence Tour, you may leave having only experienced the Moonlight Paddle. Do not let this discourage you from trying this experience, but be prepared for the possibility.

Giving this 4 stars based on LAST years experience. Were I to only have last weekends experience to measure by, this would have been a 3 star vote.

We originally signed up for the moon light wildlife tour during the full moon but had a lightening storm. A Day away graciously fit us in two nights later for the bio tour. Friendly efficient phone person. Good instructions to get to landing site. Fun guides. "E" was especially nice & seemed to want to get to know us. This trip was my honey's idea so I was a little squeamy about kyaking & kyaking at night with unfamiliar critters like huge manatees & gators. My husband is 60, I'm 50 & our daughter is 13 & non of us had difficulty paddling considering we're out of shape & complete novices. It turned out to be not so creepy . We had a little trouble finding the bio lum but once we did it was very cool. Our whole family loved it & couldn't stop "playing" in the water. Like nothing we've ever seen before. We had a decent showing of bio lum considering how close to the full moon it was & Titusville had had a lot of rain storms which can affect the presence of the bio lum. Paddling back to the landing was funny & creepy at the same time. The Mullet fish get frightened by the boats & leap out of the water. One poor girl got one in her boat & she couldn't stop squealing. We felt very safe & would recommend this trip to other families. We used fly spray before we left the house & were only bothered in one area once. One gentleman brought the "healthy" spray & was chewed quite badly. We used full on poison & were fine. My only minor complaint is that the lead guide paddled quite quickly. It seemed like quite a few of us were giving it all we had. People up front would ask questions but the guide was moving so quickly only the first few boaters could hear the reply & partake in the discussion.

We took the 8:15 pm bioluminescent kayak tour during a "new moon". The meeting place is remote, but directions were right on (may be a bit hard to find in the dark though). Mosquitos were the worst I've experienced, so heed all instruction sabout wearing repellent (and go for the good stuff!) and long sleeves/pants. The staff were laid back, yet helpful and seemed very organized. After a brief but thorough kayak lesson, you're off and on the water. Staff seemed good with safety, giving as all glow sticksand whistles to wear and instructions for what do to if there are any problems. After a 30 minute easy kayak, you end up in an area with AMAZING bioluminescence! It was like magic fairy dust! So cool! And the stars were fantastic as well - it is so dark and remote that we could easily see the Milky Way. We were constantly amazed looking down, then amazed looking up at the sky - We are from the suburbs so we just don't get to see stars like that! After about 30 minutes of splashing about with sparkle water, we headed back. This was the bad part for our family. It was against current and VERY challenging. At one point it seemed like I was paddling as hard as I could, and barely moving. Ugh! However, other kayakers didn't seem to have as much of a problem with the return. Perhaps because we are novices, and had a 10 and 12 year old in each boat? Any way, it did kind of end the night on a bit of a (sweaty, exhausted) downer. However, we still talk about the trip and the amazing bioluminescence and stars, and would totally tell others to go.

Unfortunately for us, we did not see any bio-luminescent on our night. Nonetheless it was an interesting kayak trip. The guides are nice and attentive, helped us get in and out, but they seem to just talk to the few kayaks who were around them, so for the most time we pretty much were paddling on our own, playing bumper boats with other kayaks. I don't mind that as I enjoyed the kayaking by itself, but I can imagine someone who's out there not for the sport but to see something interesting or Floridian can be disappointed.

The pace is really slow, probably to accommodate visitors who are kayaking for the first time.

The mosquitoes were brutal. We wore long sleeves shirts and long pants, but that didn't keep them away. We did rub lots of bug spray before we got in, but did not spray on top of our clothings to avoid staining our clothes. Big mistake. My upper arms and shoulders look like I have small pox. So if you go, do spray tons of super strong repellents all over yourself. Don't miss an inch - your face, your ears, your eyebrows... those bloodsuckers will find it.

Also, make sure you get good directions how to get there. We were somewhat lost but there was no phone signal out there.
