“A certain sense of style”
Reviewed 1 May 2012

Downtown San Diego has quite a number of smart hotels, and some that aren’t as smart as they think they are, but the majority of them suffer from that international anonymity that leaves you feeling just a little bit more dead inside. Well the US Grant isn’t exactly a boutique hotel rippling with eccentricities, after all it is in the same market as it’s neighbours, but it has does have a certain individuality that come from it history. It is clearly a hotel which when built, sometime in the first half of the 20th century, had a sense of luxury and quality; the tasteful restoration has tried to capture some of this.

Not everything about the hotel suited us, we found the only bar in the hotel a mixed blessing; it was relatively intimate, but in reality a little on the small side; some nights the live music was pleasant on other evenings it was annoying wall paper. The breakfast like wise had highs and lows, no one would recommend the Egg White Frittata and I wasn’t over impressed with the poached eggs on ciabatta which was an eggs Benedict type of affair with a rubbery poached egg and a poor hollandaise sauce. On the other hand fresh egg omelette was excellent and both the shrimp frittata and the smoked salmon breakfast were very good.

On the whole, if you’re going to stay downtown in San Diego in one of the big hotels this is one of the more interesting, not the most luxurious and certainly not among the most expensive but very nice and with its own certain sense of style.

I stayed here on business several years ago under a different owner. The hotel is still very nice with extremely helpful staff. The room was comfortable and the bathroom was remodeled with good taste and good functionality. The lobby is impressive as one should expect in a hotel of this caliber. The restaurant is quite good, too. The downside -- this trip we had a car, which cost $35 a night to park. Not good value.

Location and ambience: The US Grant is located centrally in the Gaslamp district. All important sights are in walking distance. The hotel has a luxrious, traditional-American interior. *****

Rooms: Rooms are large with especially large bathrooms. Interiors are luxurious. *****

Breakfast and Restaurants: I did not have breakfast or dinner at the hotel. n/a

Service: Service was v gd. There was also a turn-down service for rooms which was more bothersome than helpful if I was at my room. ****

Bang/Buck ratio: The hotel was worth the money (I was on a conference rate, though). However, if you do not care for luxury, you may find a better personal b/b ratio. ****

Overall rating: **** 1/2

The staff was amazingly helpful and kind. The luxury was superb. The decor was beautiful! We came there for a business trip for my husband, and brought our young son. It wasn't such a great place for kids, but without kids it would have been just wonderful :-) Gaslamp is right around the corner, as well as a shopping center and bus/trolley stops. Great location for food and getting places. Because it is in the city, the noise from trucks and people is quite loud. We did enjoy the stay, and especially the staff!

This hotel surpassed my expectations, my family and I ended up here after running away from a horrible hotel. The beds were comfortable, everything was spotless, the staff was extremely helpful and welcoming. This is definitely a home away from home, I couldn't ask for more. The only thing I didn't like was that it didn't have free wifi service, but I survived that. I would recommend this hotel to anyone and is definitely on my top list of great hotels in San Diego.
