Owner description: Discover the best kept secret in downtown San Diego. The San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is a nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving and sharing Chinese and Chinese American art, culture and history. Exhibits include a hand-carved bed that belonged to a Chinese warlord, a 1500-year-old limestone Buddha head, a tranquil Asian garden and koi pond, intricate miniature models of old Chinatown buildings, and there are always new exhibits in our new extension building.

A good historical representation of Chinese life in San Diego through the history of the city. Excellent historical photographs. A nice display of history of Chinese-American San Diego residents and their World War II service. More displays and a larger venue would be appropriate.

With a new Executive Director this 3 building museum in the Gaslamp area of downtown San Diego is making a bigger footprint. You can now join a meet up group for Chinese on Wed. evening or a Sat. morning Tai Chi practice. "Radical Machines" is the new exhibit that is featured in one of the 3 bulldings that make up this museum. Don't wait, join or visit today.

This is a great resource to get a feel for the life of early Chinese settlers in the San Diego area. There is a fascinating model of the original Chinese fishing village that once occupied the area where the convention center now sits. the museum is located in the once China Town section of the Gaslamp District and has many current buildings referenced in the resource materials. There is also a charming oriental style garden that is part of the facility and offers a nice cool respite on a hot day.

If you want a glimpse of Asian American history in San Diego, this is the place.
Early1900 artifacts from Chinese laundromats and grocery stores show me what life was like then in San Diego.
Photos of Chinese Americans serving in WWII, a Purple Heart, letters to home, a collection that stirs emotions.
There are other permanent and rotating exhibits in another building across the street. But what intrigues me most is the collection of day to day items from the lives of Chinese citizens who helped build the community.
I really enjoyed the visit.

The SD Chinese History Museum always delights me due to their active and varied calendar. Activities spread across three 1 room locations in the heart of the original Stingray or Chinese part of downtown San Diego that today is know as the Gaslamp. You can go to a lecture, view artifacts from this area, exercise in a Tai Chi class in the garden, participate in a monthly tour of Chinatown, attend a book launch, take a trolley tour on Sept. 10, or enjoy another activity, such as the moon fest. Admission is free during the month of September, so don't delay, so don't delay but check out this museum that is bursting with many Chinese activities.
