Wow, sometimes I wonder where these reviews are coming from and what the base line is for comparison. Yes the staff is pleasant and perhaps helpful. One would think that would be the norm for Hotel staff. The place is very plain and somewhat dated in the rooms. The location is out of the way from anything San Diego related. It's a good drive to restaurants and other services.
The breakfast is a typical buffet that should be fine to start your day but I would not go crazy reviewing it as a Wow meal. Use it as an overnight stop but don't plan your entire vacation stay on this one. Of course you could do worse so it's up to you but make sure you understand it's somewhat remote and plain.

Homewood Suites by Hilton in Del Mar was one of the best hotels we stayed in - great service from check-in to the cleaning to the breakfast/dining staff. Its very conveniently located off I-5/805, in between Carlsbad (since we wanted to visit Legoland) and downtown San Diego area (Zoo, Balboa park, USS Midway etc.). They offered free breakfast - and midweek (since we stayed 1 week) elegant dinner receptions - nothing fancy - but just great for a snack after returning to the hotel after a long day. Very close to Torrey Pines Golf Resort, La Jolla etc. We stayed there in December 2010 - but since that was not an option to choose had to select the last available date in the menu below.

This hotel is just something you can't go wrong with! The staff was super friendly, the room is clean and full of all amenities you may need, the location is a bit "out" of central San Diego and not near the Gaslamp Quarter but that's fine b/c it would probably be quite noisy there-this location was so quiet and pleasant. It's definitely not a fancy hotel but we came to the conclusion that some of these fancy places are just snooty and actually leave out so many amenities, so who needs fancy when you have "normal?" My friend and I had such a pleasant stay and would definitely return to this hotel!

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 - the location. While very close to freeways and convenient ( right in the middle between Legoland and Seaworld and about 10 min drive from Del Mar beach), it lacks neighborhood feel( you are in a business park that could be anywhere in the southern part of the US), and you can't walk anywhere except Garden Inn next door and its 2 restaurants. But I am not complaining- in a better location we would probably have paid a lot more than we did.
The hotel is not old ( i.e. no old carpet smell), but is starting to show some scratches on the walls and wear on the furniture. Our 1-bedroom suite had a good size bedroom and a rather small living room (might be too small for 4 adult-size people). The sofa bed was full-size, not queen. I am 5'7", and I don't think anybody taller than me could sleep in it comfortably. It was also really soft, while the king bed mattress in the bedroom was really hard- unexpected extremes for a hotel. The bathroom has some really nice features (quartz countertop, good storage), but others were quite cheap-looking (plain white tile floor, plastic faux-marble tub). But it was very clean. We missed a clothes line to dry our swimsuits, or better yet, a balcony. The kitchen was good-looking and functional. Overall, the room was very clean.
Now what we loved:
1) free parking
2) free breakfast- not super huge variety, but something for everyone and something new every day, and very tasty( and we are rather picky about the taste of our food)
3)FREE DINNER Mon-Thur- a fresh-looking salad, a delicious hot entree, and beverages including wine and beer( with refills)
4) free Wi-Fi in the room
5) all the staff friendly, helpful and very responsive.

Overall, this hotel is fantastic value, and we had a great stay because of all the perks. I just wish it was in a more lively and walkable location.

Room Tip: Avoid ground floor. Views of the pool better than next door buildings.

We stayed for two nights. We had a one bedroom on the third floor and it was very spacious, very clean, and quiet. Plenty of room for 5 adults to relax and walk around. The beds were very comfortable with a lot of pillows. The staff was wonderful and the hot breakfast was delicious. There was an abundance of great food to choose from. They served alot of different foods including fresh fruit, ham slices, corned beef hash, scrambled eggs, salsa and tortillas, oatmeal and a variety of pastries and breads, too. Also, the dining room had very large tables so there was more than enough room for our family to eat together. This was a very nice treat. The kitchenette was a great money saver for us although it was a bit small. We were able to feed 2 people at a time on the tiny table however, it worked out great. We did not have a stove just 2 burners. This worked out fine for us. We had precooked our main dishes at home and just reheated in the room. We brought a lasagna (costco), fresh bread and bag of salad one night and a potroast, instant potatoes and steamed veggie in a bag the second night. It is nothing fancy but a healthy alternative and it saved us alot on restuarants. We highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We had a room facing west and we were able to enjoy a lovely sunset.
