Unfortunately, our stay at this hotel single handedly ruined our vacation. We stayed at this hotel for a conference in the middle of March. Our room was on the first floor overlooking the street. The noise was so loud from the street that we couldn't sleep. The second night we were there a bunch of young guests banged on our room door at 1 am thinking that there was a party in our room. The next morning (St. Patty's Day) we awoke to a large tent with adjacent green lanterns being set up steps from the hotel and a stage right beside it. Needless to say we didn't want another sleepless night and moved to another hotel.

The rooms were small, and run down. There are much nicer hotels in the gaslamp district for not much more money. Would never return.

Dear Guest, I sincerely apologize for your experience. We should not have put you on the first floor in the front of hotel on the week end ,especially St Paddy's day weekend. That wasn't going to end well. Special party events like that hotel guests receive free tickets because the hotel is actually "inside" the event area. Nice if you came for the party, not so nice if you just came for a vacation. We should have told you at check in . Again I apologize.

The room I stayed in with a friend was very small, however it served it purpose. This hotel is quaint and has a lot of history, but what really counts is the location. Right in the heart of Gaslamp, we were able to walk everywhere we needed to get to.

The restaurant next door/through the lobby was good, open 24 hours and has an extensive menu.

Definitely not the lap of luxury, but will suite just fine if what you want is a place to crash. We didn't really hear any outside noise, and were on the first floor facing the back.

We stayed at the Ramada (St.James) Hotel as part of our honeymoon driving around CA.
Firstly, location is great. Perfect position in Gaslamp Qtr close to great restaurants and bars.
Secondly, you have to appreciate the history of the building and the charming lift. The rooms will be smaller given that expections 100 years ago were a little different than today.
We were a bit disappointed to have to move rooms twice before we were happy. The first room had an incredibly loud a/c unit and the second stank of smoke. However, staff were more than happy to allow us to switch rooms.
We didn't hear much noise from outside although we stayed Tuesday - Thursday.
Another plus is the roof top terrace which is incredibly romantic in the evening.
I do agree with earlier posts in that the rooms were a little shabby and such a shame given the incredible lobby area.
The age of the hotel shouldn't really be an excuse for not making adjustments for noise etc; we were married in a sold out 17th century hotel in the UK; the decor was immaculate and with no internal noise.
I would stay at the St James again but it would be nice to see a bit of TLC in the rooms.

Dear Guest , Well we're sorry you didn't like our rooms, especially since we just renovated them about 90 days ago! All new custom furniture , new chairs, new flat screen TV's . Oh my, it's a bit like being told your new baby is ugly . And since we're a 100% non-smoking hotel we're equally unhappy that our baby was being exposed to second hand smoke. Well we're glad you liked the lobby , we think it's quite fancy and yes the roof top is quite the getaway ,Faith Hill once filmed a music video up there . As for our new baby being a bit "shabby" , well "parental love" will allow us to hold our head high ;} even if our baby isn't the prettiest in the pageant.. thanks again .

Stayed one night in this hotel on a saturday. The hotel looks great and authentic, also read the sign in the elevator, it explains why they're so slow.

The 1p queensize rooms are not too big. Small bathroom without a tub.
At Saturday night, the noise from the street can be heard in the rooms adjacent to the street, so if you plan to sleep early, make sure you have a room on the other side.

The service was average: I tried to book a hotel shuttle at 8am for pickup around noon and they were fully booked. All I could get was a 10am shuttle. Also, they will not stop at rental car stations, which are on the way there.

All in all: great looking hotel, decent rooms, but average 'complimentary' services.

Dear Guest, Thank you for the kind words . You're right the hotel shuttle just goes from the hotel to the airport and back . Should you return to America's Finest City you'll find our lowest rate on the hotel's website link on our Trip Advisor listing. Ramada demands we offer our lowest rate there or we're in big trouble with mother Ramada . Thanks again and we're glad you enjoyed your stay.
