“Amazing assortment, great for train lovers!”
Reviewed 8 August 2012

Loved the homegrown feel of this railroad museum and though the viewing spaces are limited, it didn't seem insanely crowded. A wonderful variety of model railroads chugging and zooming through amazingly detailed landscapes and miniature towns. A great place for kids (and kids at heart), especially train- and car-loving toddlers. There are several walk-up platforms so shorter folks can see the higher displays, though there are also several stretches without platforms where you may find yourself lifting up a little one who wants to see what's going on and where the latest train has gone. There's a model railroad area and another space for toy train displays, which even includes a Thomas train controlled by a push-button placed at kid height. Small gift shop stocked with the expected train toys (which you cannot touch), but thankfully nothing too extravagant. Unless you (or someone you know) is a big train enthusiast, this museum alone may not warrant the trip to Balboa Park, but with a low adult admission fee (and kids are free!) it's certainly a great place to include in a bigger visit to the area.

“Trains, Trains, And More Trains”
Reviewed 6 July 2012

Our best friend used to LOVE model trains and was a real intelligent afficionado. Now that he's gone, we haven't been in years. Think they're only open now on weekends, but it sure is a sight to see so many model trains going around through life-like scenarios. Kids will love it!

“Great for 6 -99 yr olds who like trains”
Reviewed 23 June 2012

As I have two train lovers (8,4 yr olds) and a train liker (6yr old girl) we went to this nice museum. Like most model train displays it was behind plexiglass, but had many signs and movies to further your learning. Unfortunately, most of the diplays were too high for my 4 yr old, even with the occasional stairs for viewing. The musuem was worth the $8/adult (free/children) we paid, but was not the hit my 8yr old was hoping for (he want more hands-on learning).

“Impressive for all ages”
Reviewed 22 June 2012

I was very impressed with the model railroad museum. The works are expansive, highly detailed, and continually changing. One could spend a lot of time here. The clubs have done a great job in developing replications of known rail yards, historical rail locations, and general snapshots of various scenes of towns. There is good attention to detail for various periods. The only thing that would have been interesting is seeing a bit more technical detail. This museum would be good for all ages.

“My son enjoyed this!”
Reviewed 31 May 2012

Had a family day at Balboa Park on one of the free museum tuesdays for residents. In this museum there is a spot where I could watch my child watching trains on a tv. The camera for this was on one of the trains! My son loved it. He also kept telling me to take pictures!
