Loved the homegrown feel of this railroad museum and though the viewing spaces are limited, it didn't seem insanely crowded. A wonderful variety of model railroads chugging and zooming through amazingly detailed landscapes and miniature towns. A great place for kids (and kids at heart), especially train- and car-loving toddlers. There are several walk-up platforms so shorter folks can see the higher displays, though there are also several stretches without platforms where you may find yourself lifting up a little one who wants to see what's going on and where the latest train has gone. There's a model railroad area and another space for toy train displays, which even includes a Thomas train controlled by a push-button placed at kid height. Small gift shop stocked with the expected train toys (which you cannot touch), but thankfully nothing too extravagant. Unless you (or someone you know) is a big train enthusiast, this museum alone may not warrant the trip to Balboa Park, but with a low adult admission fee (and kids are free!) it's certainly a great place to include in a bigger visit to the area.
