“Waht a Place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2012

A fabulous place with a great view, that once was the point of all collection of taxes by sea going vessels entering Boston! A place with a four sided clock tower that is visible from virtually all over! A must if you go to Boston!!!

Room Tip: Stay near the top!

The Custom House is awesome. A cool, historic building in a fab location in Boston. Close to the Long Wharf, the aquarium, Quincy Market, Fanueil Hall, the North End and business in the financial district. Can't ask for a better locale to see the sites and have good food. The hotel is also very near the Blue Line aquarium T stop for easily getting around the city.

The hotel itself is very nice. Rooms are large and clean, although the bathroom is a bit dated. Don't expect a soaking tub if you are in one of the one bedroom suites. There is a mini kitchenette with fridge and sink and the sitting/dining area is very nice. Great views from all rooms too.

Also, on site is a game room, laundry, 24-hour mini gym, activity room for kids, and a very cool outdoor observation deck where you can see most of the city and harbor.

Overall, this is a very nice place to stay, and very safe and secure. However, if you are on one of the lower floors, you can hear noise off the street - especially if you are on the Quincy Market side. We stayed on the 6th floor, and it was very loud Friday and Saturday nights. The noise from the bars and traffic kept me awake most of both nights. My advice would be to request a room on a higher floor.

First, the good. The location is second to none. It is a 2-3 minute walk to the aquarium, Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market and boating tours, a meager 30 steps separates the front lobby from the Aquarium Blue Line T-stop and the North End and it's amazing restaurants is only 10 minutes away on foot. There is a quaint hotel bar on the 1st floor (which is actually the 2nd floor) and they have music, performances and presentations most nights of the week in the adjacent counting room. The bartender, David, was a delight, accommodating and a joy to chat with.

The bad. When we checked in, our floor carpeting was completely soaked for the 1st 24 hours. Shampooing the carpet? Let's hope so but it was quite uncomfortable. The kitchen facilities in the room are next to non existent. Microwave, mini fridge and sink. Dishes and utensils are included in the room as well as a small table but God knows why. We had use for coffee mugs and that's about it.

When booking the room via vacation club, we inquired into pool facilities since we were bring our 9 and 6 year olds. We were told the Custom House did not have a pool but an adjacent Marriott property did and we could use their facility. Upon arrival, we were told Custom House guests had not had pool privileges in 8 months!! Thanks for the heads up. Our kids were disappointed.

One evening, we called the front desk and asked for a 7AM wake up call. Three days and one non refundable excursion that we missed later, still waiting for that 7AM wake up call.

Do not disturb signs are more of a guideline and not a rule. One morning, the maid helped herself right in even tho the do not disturb sign was clearly posted. Next day, instead of coming in, she knocked on the door (do not disturb sign clearly posted again) and demanded I exchange out towels with her and bring her the trash cans. Now, I'm all for fresh towels and clean trash but, really?

The final night, we called and asked for a late checkout. We were told, "That will be difficult. You know, no. Can't do it.". So, down I go, rehash the trials and tribulations of the past five days and were given an extra hour and a free continental breakfast. Gee, thanks. That's right, even the yogurt and Danishes cost money...

The ugly. It is LOUD. We were on the 18th floor and could hear the homeless ( who swarm the place and pester you for money) screaming and cursing into the wee hours of the morning. The sirens are a constant. If quiet nights for sleeping are your primary goal, this place might not be for you.

Ultimately, as a vacation club member, I understand their space and amenities are limited but we pay good money for quality accommodations and I think the Custom House, for whatever reason. Is lacking.

Will we go back next time in Boston? I really don't know...

Great historical hotel and perfect location for exploring Boston. We were on the 10th floor and did not experience any street noise. We are Marriott owners at a different resort and knew before we booked that these villas were going to be smaller and that the hotel would have less facilities than other resorts. Guess that's the price you pay for a great city location.
Towels were changed daily and bins emptied so that was a bonus. The kitchen facilities were very limited and perhaps an electric hob/oven would have been good as an extra.
A few months previous to our visit, complementary leisure facilities were included for hotel guests in the other nearby Marriott hotel and it was a shame they have now discontinued this.
We didn't need to use the front desk much but on the day we decided to go to the beach, one member of the staff was extremely helpful in giving us directions and a printed map and went out of her way to help us.
We just used the breakfast facilities on one occasion and for 4 of us it worked out very reasonable.
The view from the observatory deck is absolutely amazing and on a few occasions took a bottle of wine and had our supper there whilst overlooking the Boston night skyline. The sunrise was also great up there too.
We drove our car into the city and managed to find a nearby carpark that did a great weekend rate and then $18 daily rate so this worked out much cheaper than what the hotel was charging .
Overall a great stay and would definitely return to the Custom House again if in Boston.

As I sit here on the 24th floor in the "Clock Tower" Room , families are playing pool and having a great time, while I wait for my clothes to dry and watch the inner mechanism of a 1916 clock and pendulum swing back and forth. Did I also fail to mention while also peering out glass windows on three sides onto a spectacular view of the city of Boston , its famous Markets and fabulous Harbor Views. The clock just struck 8pm and you can hear the clock with four faces which can be seen miles away as a major part of its' skyline. This truly makes this location unique. Walk out the doors and you are in one of best locations for touring the sites of Boston as well as enjoying the best in casual as well as fine New England Dining. Other reviews will address the rooms (smaller than most of Marriott's other vacation Club Destinations ) but historically elegant.
It is Location , Location , Location, in a Great City , which makes this one of its finest.

Room Tip: High floor but all views are great. Parking is expensive -Vallet. Walk or use public transportation...
