“Best place to stay in Boston.”
Reviewed 23 April 2012

It's difficult to decide where to start this review. John and Karen made us feel like we were family. They welcomed us to Boston and to the area and to their home with open arms. They made and delivered a great breakfast every day, they had great and insightful recommendations for us regarding restaurant s and places to visit. They even drove my wife to the start of the Boston Marathon. The houseboat was the perfect size to accommodate us and had everything we needed and more, a stocked refrigerator. The boat rocked us to sleep every night and protected us from the hustle and bustle of the city, but convenient to the many modes of transportation. We would definitely stay there again. It was a great 2 weeks with Karen and John and we are anxious to stay on their 2 new yachts.

What a gem of a place!! My neice and I stayed for one night, to celebrate our birthdays, and we had a fabulous time. We were greeted by Karen, the innkeeper, who felt like family!! The room was cozy and beautifully appointed. The fridge well stocked with beverages, and the kitchen area, had a little basket loaded with snacks. It was a perfect spot for a 24 hour get away!! We had a wonderful time walking the "Charlestown Harborwalk" and ate at Tavern on the Water, a lovely waterfront restaurant a few piers over from our boat. For a wonderful nite sleep, an adventurous get away, a fabulous bed in a beautifully appointed room, this place is perfect!!! The views were terrific as well.

Room Tip: undo the swimming pool rating..there was no swimming pool or fitness center!! it's a room on a h...

Being boaters we were thrilled to find the Green Turtle. We were not disappointed. The Green Turtle is an adorable floating haven. Great views of Boston waterfront and amazing water traffic and visiting swan. We loved sleeping on the water in the super comfy bed. The furnishings are cozy and rooms large and airy. Lots of windows. Only 1.6 miles walk to the heart of Little Italy and First Class restaurants and shopping. But if you don't want to walk a water taxi is available as well as land transportation. Can't say enough about Karen and Jon. They love the water and being innkeepers suits their warm and accomodating personalities. They can tell you where to go and what to do if you are first time visitors. The breakfasts are fabulous, delivered hot to your door. We really wouldn't want to stay anywhere else. It's your water home away from home.

As I write a number of travel reviews for our trip around the States, I come to the Green Turtle and I just smile. Why? Well we had been to San Francisco, Park City Utah (beautiful room), Seattle raining for 3 days and then the intensity of 57th Street in New York where we moved at high speed with the surrounding crowds. Some great things then happened. Firstly we caught a train from NYC to Boston (South Station and taxi to Green Turtle). What a great way to relax, catch up on reading and computer/internet communication and wind down from the hectic 5 days in NYC.

Then our taxi arrived at Pier 8 to be greeted by Karen (Jon was away most of our stay there). Boston is a beautiful city as it is but can be a bit cold and grey in March.....well we brought mid to high 20 degree weather, that is celsius, 80-90F weather for those in the States reading this, no wind and picture postcard conditions on the water. The intensity of the first two weeks in the states just drained out of us and we sat back to thoroughly enjoy Boston from the comfort of the Green Turtle. There are many bonuses of this property which have been mentioned in prior reviews, so I will try and add some things that we were concerned about or things we found either unexpectedly or beyond your hopes.

- Transport. This is so easy from Charlestown. Not only is the bus easy as indicated in the website and free but you can get around so many very, very easy ways. Walk (we walked home once after walking all day), walk and ferry, taxi is cheap. We did do this in great weather, so I can understand it may be a little harder in inclement weather
- Exercise. We are just moderate exercise people, just enough to keep the weight neutral against the U.S food and drink :-) Beautiful runs along the boardwalk and up to Bunker Hill. Great views and good variety of running surfaces.
- Tranquility. Both my wife and sister who travelled with us love the water and with perfect weather conditions we had postcard conditions that were identical to many of the travellers pictured on the TA thread. Some pretty big boats go by as well and they only seem inches away.
- Variety. In our trip we stayed in a range of accom, hotels, bed and breakfasts and an apartment. Nothing like this and it just breaks up the pattern of busy streets, high rise and lots of neighbours, plus the best views of any of our stops.

Tip. We got a tip to head up to the Warren Tavern which is more of a locals pub...good food and ambience. Also first drink was straight around to the Tavern on the Water, about 5mins walk. Very nice place for a drink and food if you like but it does get crowded, so try and avoid peak times especially on warm nights.

Room Tip: Only two rooms to choose from and they are identical.

The Green Turtle is not a hotel or a B&B. It is an EXPERIENCE! The stay was a birthday celebration surprise for me and it couldn't have been better. Everything was perfect. The location is unbelievable, so peaceful and quiet, right in the middle of all the downtown Boston action. Jon and Karen are amazing hosts and take care of every possible detail that you can think of including delicious breakfasts. The gentle rocking of the boat during the nights made us sleep like babies. We will be back for sure!
