“College touring in Western Carolinas”
Reviewed 14 April 2012

My husband, daughter, and I meandered along Rt. 81 from Dc suburbs to look at various colleges. We stopped in Asheville and fell in love with the area. Our stay was made enjoyable by the wonderful staff at the Renaissance hotel. They were able to give us suggestions for shopping & dining within walking distance of the hotel. Asheville is a charming town with artsy little shops and a wide variety of different cuisines offered in their many restaurants. For a small city, Asheville has a lot to offer. It is beautifully set at the base of the Great Smoky Mountains so outdoorsy types will find a lot of activities. It hss been gaining popularity recently as a retirement spot. Also, it is home to UNC Asheville which has a student population of around 7000. Many other colleges are within a 1-2 hour drive. It has a thriving arts community and home to yhe Biltmore Estate. Well worth the trip.

Room Tip: Although we did not think to ask, I would see if you could get a room with a mountain view.

We stayed three nights at this hotel and had a wonderful time. We stayed on the concierge level on the top floor. The staff in the concierge suite were really polite, outgoing, and very helpful with directions and recommendations for sites and restaurants. The breakfast and dinner snacks were great and plentiful. Our view of the area was excellent. Our room was very nice but standard size for most hotels. The amenities in the smallish bathroom were above average. The bed was very comfortable and we had plenty of pillows. The hotel had free parking (nice for a change) and it's location was in the heart of the town for easy walking.

Room Tip: Our room was on the 12th floor (top). We had a super view.

We stayed 2 nights here as part of a tour. The location is central and just a short stroll to the centre of town. The public areas and restaurant have recently been refurbished and have a modern and bright look. The double rooms are rather small and the bathroom tiny. Our friends had a twin room which was much more spacious but still had the tiny bathroom! We ate in the restaurant 1 evening and had breakfast and 1 lunch there too. All tasty and nicely presented.
No free internet in the lobby which we would have expected at this class of hotel. Not everyone travels with their laptop!

Room Tip: If you want more space, ask for a twin room rather than a double.

The lobby is newly remodelled and beautiful. The room was comfortable but could have benefitted from the lobby's color scheme. On the negative side, the bathroom is very small as are the bed pillows. I would have slept better with a larger pillow. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Zeb, the concierge, is a definite assett. Over all we had a nice stay. I would recommend this hotel to a friend and would stay here again.

Have only been here on business- so with that being said, it is an awesome space to host a conference. Staff is extremely attentive, you have multiple conference suites to meander about, room is adequate, bed is fantastic, views are amazing (City or Mountain).

Room service menu is pricey, but it does come reasonably fast and there are multiple choices. But you're in Asheville! Go out to eat!! You are within walking distance to all the awesome downtown eateries and cool Ashevillian scene. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a bit out of the way though, about 7-10 minutes by car.

The fitness center and indoor pool are adequate, as well.

My complaints- IF you happen to get stuck in on a rainy day, the TV is slow to respond to the remote, the telephones were often unreliable with disconnecting/loose connections. The internet in-room was slow.

Room Tip: Depends on your preference- cityscape or mountainside. Either way, choose a high floor.
