Owner description: Located on the edge of the University of North Carolina – Asheville the Botanical Gardens at Asheville were a real treat to visit. First, the Garden is located about 10 minutes from downtown Asheville which made it an easy site to visit. Second, the trail is well tended, beautiful and relaxing. If you ran it the trail is maybe 15 minutes long. If you stroll then it’s as long as you’d like. Lastly, and most important, you get to see some truly spectacular native plants in their natural habitat including a very rare Pink Lady’s-slipper orchid (Cypripedium acaule). As a matter of fact I saw FOUR with two still in bloom as well as several yellow and white lady’s slipper orchids that had finished blooming. To see them in their native habitat is rare enough. That some knucklehead had not come by and picked them is even more amazing. Some added treats include a large stone near the main stream that clearly shows the markings of its molten past and appears to be shaped like a dragon.

“Go, but not the best in early spring”

1st of April was a bit too early. Recommend waiting a bit later to visit. Beautiful buildings. Those working the info desk were not the best informed based on similar venues.

“Great Little Park”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 April 2012

Well maintained and very walkable, this small inner city park is a delight for listening to the water, watching the birds and just relaxing with a good book or with friends. Picnic tables and benches are available.

“Beautiful native plant garden worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 April 2012

This lovely garden spot at the edge of the UNC campus is a great place for a short hike.
The gardens are a wonderland of over 600 species of native trees, shrubs, and flowers, with winding paths and a nice sunny picnic area. Open sunrise to sunset. Most paths are wheelchair accessible. No dogs are allowed in the garden.

“Peaceful and beautiful”

Incredible Bonsai garden. And at the time of our visit, a huge "quilt" of flowers in the main square. Loved it.

“Walked here every day during my stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2012

I was in Asheville on assignment and had the pleasure of working and living near the gardens. I walked from my apartment through the gardens to and from work and took a stroll at lunch. Yes, it is a small area but the trail has some elevation changes and the stream running through is charming. It was never very crowded during the week. Sometimes on weekends there would be a fairly large group, but it is generally a peaceful, beautiful place to spend time.
