Two nights at Old Rittenhouse Inn

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Jul 2024via mobile
Wonderful place to stay- historic charm and excellent staff- we had a great time. The grounds are so beautiful and you can sit on the veranda and enjoy coffe in the morning. The location is also excellent for downtown activities and shopping.

We returned again to our favorite B&B and as usual the stay was outstanding. The Rittenhouse is a very cool Victorian home in Bayfield with fabulous food (do not skip the breakfast!), excellent staff, a great location, clean antique filled rooms, and beautiful views.

We stayed at the Rittenhouse on our honeymoon 44 years ago. We wanted to celebrate our 44th anniversary by booking the same room. I called a year in advance and explained what room we had booked on our honeymoon. The person at the Rittenhouse that I talked to told me it was room VII. When we checked into our room, it was not the same room we had on our honeymoon. We should have booked room IV. I was disappointed because room VII did not have a Lake View. It had a balcony with a couple of chairs, but it looked out over the parking lot.

The room was clean, however, my husband said he didn't like the smell in the room. He just described it as "old" smelling. I have a terrible sense of smell, so I didn't notice the "old" smell. The bed was really hard so I slept on the sofa that was in the room. If you want clean towels, you have to ask for them. Housekeeping doesn't come in unless you request it. The whirlpool in room VII is wonderful!

Breakfast is included with your stay. You need to make reservations for breakfast. We made reservations for 9 am each day, but if we got up early, we went down for breakfast and they were very accommodating. You can choose from 5 options for breakfast. Quiche was very good, but tell them to not put the hot sauce on the plate! I felt that the breakfast portions were small. I would have liked to have some fruit with my breakfast. Servers were very nice and checked on us frequently to see how everything tasted.

One thing that I thought was VERY tacky was that at the end of the meal, the server brought out a receipt that showed "0" owed for meal but there was a place to add a tip. My husband is a generous tipper and left a $10 tip every day. I wouldn't have left a tip because the meal was included with the room and servers should be paid by the Inn a good wage considering the cost of the room!

You can make reservations to eat at the restaurant if you are not staying at the Inn. I would check the menu before you book your reservation. In my opinion, meals are overpriced for what you get. Serving sizes are small.

We liked the location of the Inn because it was easy walking distance to the docks to see all of the sailboats.

Room tip: Call the Inn directly and tell them what you would like for a room and ask them about their meal choices.

This was our 3rd stay at Old Rittenhouse. We had the master suite in Le Chateau and it was amazing. The view from this historic property is incredible. Everything is top notch when you stay here -- breakfast, dinner, service/staff members, room quality! I highly recommend Old Rittenhouse and look forward to returning in the future.

Room tip: Le Chateau has an amazing porch to enjoy with a glass of wine!

We have been coming on and off to Bayfield and the Old Rittenhouse inn for 34 years. It never disappoints! Very gracious inn keeper ( now the son of the original owners) and friendly reception staff Always delicious breakfast. We really like staying at the Chateau Boutin, a separate property they own only a few blocks away. ( we have stayed in both the Master Suite and Tower rooms on the 2nd floor) Whether you stay at the Inn or the Chateau you will be happy you did!

Sent this to the establishment but never received a response.
Your front staff were very accommodating and upgraded us for no additional charge.
We also had dinner that evening.
One note we just stayed at Solglint in Duluth and it was one of the best nights sleep due to luxury linens and a very comfortable bed.
We paid $313.00 for one night in Duluth.
At your price unfortunately we had a terrible nights sleep due to very scratchy bed linens, which had stains on fitted sheet, lumpy mattress and had no way to get the room cooler. We left exhausted and cancelled our 9:30 breakfast. We spent over $500 and had to return my husband’s over cooked steak when he ordered med-rare to rare. I finished my meal before his steak came out. We were the only two left in dining room. My husband didn’t eat his dinner and took steak in to go box. For $84 for his special steak dinner he never ate.
I’m sorry but we were very disappointed.
    Sincerely
    Kathy Peterson
