Love our Annual Trip to Bayfield

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 6 Aug 2017
We try to get up to Bayfield every summer and we always stay the Le Chateau, a 2nd B&B run by the Old Rittenhouse Inn. This time we stayed 4 nights in the 3rd floor Turret Suite which offers a nice view of Lake Superior. The reason we love the Le Chateau is the front porch-a great place to have smoked fish purchased in town with beer and enjoy the Lake Superior view. Being on the porch, It feels so much like you own the place-I wish I did!

Stayed 1 night at the Rittenhouse in Bayfield before my husband did the Point to LaPoint swim in Lake Superior (shows we must be a bit crazy to even do that), but was a beautiful weekend. We have stayed here in the past and have enjoyed the location, views and the hospitality. The staff is tremendous and always helpful. Place is Victorian so do not think this is the modern hotel you may be used to. They have done wonderful upgrades. We had room 2 - queen bed (prefer king, but oh well). Nice fireplace, although not needed in July. Bathroom small but efficient with sink in the bedroom. Wonderful view of Lake Superior. Bed was decent but pillows were foam and a bit firm. No television - I was happy, but my news junkie husband was a bit put off (guess I forgot to tell him that part!). There was no wifi connection in our room at all - the whole time. Front desk did their best, tried to reboot, etc. but didn't help at all. Not sure if this is unusual but beware if in room 2 you may not have any wifi.
Do have drinks on the porch overlooking the city and the lake. Very relaxing - they will get you a drink or bring your own, either way, was a great way to start the dinner.
Did the 5 course dinner - fantastic! Service is great - Betty was our server, both on the porch and for dinner. She was a joy!!!
    Would recommend their dinner.

This was our first stay at a B&B and we really enjoyed our visit here!
My husband turned 50 and chose a kayaking tour of the caves on Lake Superior. I spent hours on the internet reviewing hotel options. I wanted to make sure it was perfect for this special occasion. I didn't know what to expect as we are pretty picky about food and cleanliness is a priority for me.

As soon as we walked into the Inn we were impressed! It was lovely and everything from the decor, food, service, and cleanliness was met with our high expectations! I could go on and on and describe our experience but for me photos speak the most in volumes so I will include those to help you make your decision.

One thing I would advise is make sure you make your dinner and complimentary breakfasts reservation when booking. They are always full!

We enjoyed our stay so much that we have been telling friends and family to return with us at another date!

    Thank you Old Rittenhouse!

I've stayed at the Old Rittenhouse three times and the place is the grand dame of inns in Bayfield. The property is beautifully maintained and I can't imagine how much work it was to update this place with modern plumbing and other mechanicals.

Even the little things are perfect. The air conditioner is our room was silent. We never heard it kick in. The king size bed has just the right amount of firmness.

Never used the whirlpool hot tub, but it's there.

The is staff is friendly, yet you never get the sense they're hovering around.

We didn't eat dinner here. The menu looked fabulous, but it just wasn't the vibe we were looking for and Bayfield has plenty of options. Their dinner menu is pricey, less than the soon-to-close acclaimed Wild Rice, but more than the casual spots a few block away where you can eat outside with a fantastic view of the harbor.

    Breakfast was excellent.

The only suggestion I have for the owners is regarding happy hour on their great wrap around porch. Rather than hits us for $7 for a sangria during happy hour, offer a complimentary drink upon arrival. It sets a better tone.

I stayed for 3 nights in the North East room in Le Chateau. The room was very spacious, with an angled view of the lake (best view while lying in bed, which was nice). The property is beautiful, with many period details and furnishings. Victorian decor is not necessarily my taste, but I can really appreciate the attention to detail here. I enjoyed having the "run of the house" at Le Chateau, wandering down the back staircase in the morning to make coffee (although I did have to clean the coffee pot and maker first, as they'd been left dirty). Every room has a wine opener and 2 wine glasses, which came in handy as I enjoyed a bottle with a friend one evening in the very pleasant surroundings. The bed in the North East room was very unique, a massive carved frame. The mattress was fairly comfortable. I would have appreciated better quality all-cotton sheets. It was unseasonably cool while I was there, so even thought the central air was on, it wasn't set that cool, and can't be individually adjusted, so I opened the window. Only one window seemed to open and have a screen; wished it had been the one closest to my bed, as I like fresh air at night. They did also have a portable fan available. Everyone who worked there was extremely pleasant and helpful. I enjoyed breakfast at the Rittenhouse each morning (a short walk away) - more food than I could eat. I had dinner there with a friend one evening, and the food was delicious. The wi-fi worked just fine. The Rittenhouse isn't cheap (neither is Bayfield overall), but I thought it was a good value. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

Room tip: Most rooms have some lake view. The Tower room at Le Chateau has the best view.

We stayed in the Moroccan Suite and it was absolutely lovely. The details of the design were there and the room was much more spacious than expected. The staff was helpful and eager to accommodate requests, such as hot water for tea, late night dessert, or questions about the area.

There were a few little things that could have been better, considering the price of the room.

    1) The hot tub looked clean until we turned on the jets and hair came out of the jets. We had to drain the entire tub, clean it, and start over again (it's large tub so it took a while, not mention the wasted water).

    2) The CD player didn't work. I'm not sure there needs to be one in the room, but if you're going to have one, it should work.

    3) The "brunch" was disappointing. I'm pretty sure some of the fruit was previously frozen and included grapes and pineapple. The "bakery" item was the smallest, flattest biscuit I've ever seen; I'm pretty sure it was from a mix or even pre-made. The entree was bland and the serving was small. The quiche looked like it had been sitting for a while and the scramble was, well, scrambled eggs with pesto in them. The servings were small, which I'm okay with small servings if the food is satisfying, but I left there feeling like I needed to eat again.

All those little things aside, we had a relaxing time, and found the place tranquil, quiet, and a perfect getaway...just plan to have breakfast somewhere else.
