Stunning Location For Romantic Getaway

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 26 Jun 2016via mobile
My husband and I stayed in the Ballroom at Le Chateau property. We both agreed the views of the lake were much better than at the Rittenhouse. We didn't have a view of the lake from our room, but the Touret room looked to be the place for that.

The Innkeepers and staff were welcoming and gracious, with constant reminders to make this our home and enjoy. The Chateau is a beautifully restored 1908 Queen Ann Victorian with the best porch to sit and drink morning coffee.

I highly recommend this location for any couple. My only notice, not a big enough issue to call a concern or complaint, was the room temperature in the Ballroom was close to 68 all the time. I believe that is just what happens, as I am sure regulating the temp throughout a big old house is a challenge. I have recommended the room be stocked with extra blankets.

Thanks for your stay at Le Chateau and for taking time to write a review. We're glad you enjoyed the Ballroom. Every time I check someone into that room I remember how, at seventeen, I had to strip and refinish all the woodwork in that room! It took me about 2 weeks. You are correct that regulating the temperature throughout a big old Victorian mansion can be a challenge. Our central air system was updated this spring and the new system did it's job a bit too well for a few days before we got it all straightened out. We do keep extra blankets and pillows in every room, but we encourage guests to contact us if there is anything we can do to make their stay more comfortable. We appreciate you sharing your comments and suggestion regarding the blankets... it is by listening to our guests that we learn everything we need to know about running our business. Thanks again for being our guests. We look forward to another chance to serve you in the future. Best regards, Mark and Wendy

This was our first visit to Bayfield. We spent 4 nights here and had dinner 2 times at the Inn. We spent a good amount of money here. The food was excellent and the room was very nice. For the most part the staff was friendly. At one point felt like we were judged because of my husbands tattoo and the fact that we didn't order wine. I am allergic to an ingredient found in wine, so unfortunately I can't have any. If we where, I'd say don't judge- we are two professional people that have a great appreciation for fine food and supporting Wisconsin businesses. We chose Bayfield over Europe. Despite that we had a great time and enjoyed ourselves.

We are grateful for your 4 night stay, for dining with us several times, and for your review. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your room and food. We are sorry that you felt judged re: tattoos. I myself have a tattoo, as do many of our employees. As a business, and as people, we respect everybody's decisions regarding their own bodies. We are an equal opportunity employer, and extend that same philosophy to our guests. We hope everyone will feel welcome and accepted at Old Rittenhouse Inn. Thanks again for your visit. We hope to see you again sometime. Warmest wishes, Mark and Wendy

Our night at Rittenhouse was actual in the second property as there were no rooms available at the Rittenhouse.. We were first of all very impressed when the young lady serving us said she would drive over and meet us there. My wife was almost giddy with excitement as we wandered through the mansion. It was sort of a rainy, cool night, but we had a great time siting on the porch watching the Madeline Island ferry go back and forth between Bayfield and LaPointe. Attention to detail was incredible, and there is nothing I could say that would be negative about the entire experience. The breakfast the following morning was, once again, incredible. (This was our third stay) The entire Rittenhouse experience is such that after all of our years of staying in Ashland on our vacations, we will stay at least one night in one of the properties, even though it is an additional 21 miles to get to Bayfield. The entire staff can be proud of their efforts. About the cost ... yes, the price is more that some of you have paid, BUT the value is awesome. The free breakfast along with the service and the incredible rooms makes this entire experience worth EVERY penny you spend. Husbands:: You should be ashamed if you know about this place and you never take your wife here.

Room tip: All of the rooms have their own personality. We pick a different room each time, made easy with an extensive photo array on the website.

I love this review, it made me smile (especially the last line). Thanks so much for being our guests and taking time to share your experience here on Trip Advisor. We are pleased you enjoyed your third stay, the staff, food, accommodations, etc. We are especially grateful that you found our service to be of great value. That is a hard thing to get across to the public on your web site, blog, etc.... many folks just see a price tag and what comes with it. We are striving to create an atmosphere in which our guests can relax and rejuvenate. It is our sincere hope that when people leave here they feel refreshed and ready to return to everyday life. We greatly appreciate the fact that you drive out of your way to spend the night with us, and promise to continue providing the experience you have come to expect. With our gratitude and best wishes, Mark and Wendy

My husband and I stayed here when we decided to take a detour on our way back from Minneapolis to Michigan. It was before the summer season took off, so there was not much happening in town and barely anything open. Luckily we were able to stay here in a great suite with a fireplace, whirlpool tub, and delicious breakfast served downstairs.
There was no TV which was kind of odd, but it helped add to the the historic feel. They do have internet, so we just watched Netflix on the iPad.
All the furniture and decor is very antique and ornate. If you have a respect for that sort of thing, you would love it here. We hope to come back when it is warm enough to use the wrap around porch in front!

Thank you for taking a detour on your way back to Michigan! We're pleased you enjoyed your stay during the "quiet time." You probably would be shocked to see how busy it was here this past summer. Thanks for your patronage, we hope to see you again another time.

Stayed for a week at the old rotten house inn. Staff was pleasant. Enjoyed meeting other travelers. Nice views of the lake while dining or sitting on the porch. Easy walk to downtown and the lake. The food was wonderful. We had fresh fish everyday for breakfast. Loved the rhubarb jam.

Glad you enjoyed your stay and meeting fellow travelers! Pleased you enjoyed the food and preserves. It's funny about serving fish for breakfast.... my parents came to Bayfield on their anniversary in 1968 and were served fish for breakfast at one of the local establishments (now long gone). My dad was like, "Fish? For breakfast? What's this all about?"

When they started their B&B 7 years later, they started serving... you guessed it. Fish. For breakfast. Local fish has been a staple on the menu ever since. We like dusting it with a mild cajun 'reddening' and pan searing with butter.

We're so happy you enjoyed everything, and look forward to another chance to serve you.

We had dinner this past weekend and was very disappointed. We are returning customers and have always been more than pleased, however this weekends food was prepared poorly, portions were small and it was heated in the microwave.. (verified by staff) you expect more with a five course meal. Not sure we will be returning!

This review would be better placed on our restaurant's page on Trip Advisor, as the reviewers did not stay at our Inn. Regardless, we are very sorry to hear of the reviewer's dissatisfaction with their recent meal at Landmark Restaurant at Old Rittenhouse Inn. We always strive to exceed expectations and provide a quality casual fine dining experience. This review doesn't give us much to work with, as it doesn't mention what was wrong specifically. However, I can assure that the only things we use a microwave here for are hot tea water and, occasionally, sticky jasmine rice (which seems to hold better when kept chilled). All our dishes here are made from scratch, by hand. We very rarely hear that portions are too small, in fact, it is usually just the opposite. So, not knowing what the reviewer ordered, we are unable to comment on that. We are unaware of any service issues from this past weekend, other than one steak that was ordered medium rare but was returned to the kitchen when the guests wanted it cooked more, ultimately to medium well. We always strive to correct mistakes immediately when they are brought to our attention by a guest, and are unsure whether the reviewer mentioned their dissatisfaction to their server while they were dining. In any case, we value their feedback and patronage. We hope to earn another chance to exceed their expectations in the future.
