This was the first stop on our Highway 1 road trip and it was a good choice. Comfy beds and nice bathrooms. The hotel is well placed close to Union Square and the cable car turnaround, and public transport is good. The receptionist was very welcoming after our long flight and quickly and efficiently sorted out a slight mix up with our booking. We had breakfast in the Grand Cafe twice and it was excellent both times. We did feel slightly uncomfortable if we were out after about 10pm, especially when we walked a couple of blocks south, because of all the pan handlers. But overall, I'd love to go back.

What a great place to stay for the weekend- close to everything, within walking distance actually.
The suite was small, but very cozy, adorable, fun and had lots of character.
The bar in this place is AMAZING... Grand Cafe Brasserie, food rocked, cocktails stellar, and so was the service.
I will definitely be back to this Kimpton property...

Room Tip: make sure you get a goldfish for your room- ours died but I love the idea..

This is a great hotel. I read some of the reviews and many were complaining of small rooms. Actually we were on the 7th floor which was newly renovated and the rooms were a good size. Hotel is really steps from Union Square and couple of blocks from market street. We walked everywhere, Chinatown, Pier 39, shopping districts. The city is really a lot like NYC, miles of walking, but with hills. We liked the room and style of the decorations, kind of a boutique feel to it. Free wine testing in the lobby room 5-6 everyday. I would suggest this to anyone. Affordable and right in the midst of things. Now if they could just get rid of the 50 bums in this area, it would be perfect.

Extremely small room for two with......get ready for this......a canopy bed! The person unlucky to find himself(herself) against the wall is in for some tricky manuvering during the night - especially if one needs to use the restroom. (But charming in a crazy sort of way.) Complementary wine served in late afternoon but used glasses not removed for hours. Leather chairs by the fireside are in desperate need of cleaning. Probably not a repeat for us frequent San Francisco visitors.

Room Tip: Great Union Square location - but don't tread too far off the beaten path toward the Square.

This is the smallet hotel room I've ever stayed at in North America and I wasn't particularly fond of the decor. Our room also faced the dumpsters of the back alley. The neighborhood is not so nice but close enough to walk to Union Square. There's a Walgreen right across from the hotel which was very convenient to get water, snacks and necessities. Service is great! One front desk agent recomended Sanraku for dinner which was very good. They would also give you tons of stuff that you forgot to pack for your trip. For example, dental floss, contact lense case, contact lense solution...etc. They can also help you print out your boarding pass which I didn't find very useful since we still had to go through the line ups at the airport. We reserviced a car to take us to the airport for $55 I think. The driver was very on time and the ride was very smooth. Would also recommend breakfast at Honey Honey Cafe & Crepery nearby.
