“Two Stays - both excellent”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2012

Great position close to Union Square. Friendly staff. Large clean rooms. Would highly recommend for a reasonably priced friendly hotel perfectly situated to enjoy San Francisco. One negative which is to be expected, is the noise from the road, but you are in the centre of a major city and there is going to be traffic. So don't be surprised.

Room Tip: odd numbered rooms are on the quiet side of the hotel - the higher the floor the better

We stayed here in April 2012 for 5 nights.

The Hotel is good but is by no means perfect.

The location of the hotel is by far and away the best part. It is located right in the middle of San Francisco right near Union Square and only about a 5 minute walk from the famous SF Cable Cars.

When you first walk in you'll notice the lobby is a bit dated, but welcoming enough, there is one small reception/concierge desk on the left as you walk in with two aging lifts on the right hand side.

Keep walking past the Reception desk and you'll see a business centre (only one computer), some leaflets, toilets and a helpful ATM.

The hotel was undergoing renovation at the time of our stay, so the lifts were adorned with dust blankets to hide the paint/dust etc. and debris that was coming from the floors where the renovation work was going on.

The floor we were on had been newly renovated and looked like a modern 4/5 star hotel. The rooms themselves you could tell were old but had been newly painted and renovated, so certain things like the door locks etc. weren't replaced by modern counterparts.

The room we stayed in was nice enough, and once again looked like any other 4/5 star hotel room complete with modern natural woods, lights and other amenities. What was annoying is we had a window that didn't close throughout our whole stay which meant on Friday/Saturday night you could hear all the late night revellers enjoying the bars and clubs.

Other issues with the room were the sheets and bedding. On the service they were perfectly adequate but they were adorned with cigarette burns and numerous questionable stains which weren't exactly pleasant.

The We ate at the Zingari restaurant and had a fantastic meal there, but that is the only hotel actually inside the hotel, if you fancy somewhere different one night you'll have to venture out into the city and find one.

There was also no breakfast offered atall, so we ended up going to the diner opposite (which was very nice).

I couldn't comment on the bar/lounge as we didn't venture into there but it looked very nice with jazz singers/musicians performing.

Overall, the Donatello is a perfectly good hotel, but just eminates this feeling of being dated throughout, even with the renovations done on our room and the floor we were on there were certain touches here and there that weren't brought into 2012. The whole hotel is still a bit dated and until they update the lobby, improve the rooms further and make some additions here and there I don't think the Donatello will ever be a truly great hotel.

If you're staying in SF and want a pretty decent hotel you can't go far wrong with the Donatello but you could definitely do better.

Our stay at the Donatello was a terrific experience. Our neice met us at the hotel for a few days of vacation before attending a work conference. She loves food and had a list of places for us to visit. The Donatello was a good launching spot. The location was perfect. We were walking distance from Union Square Park, public transportation, great shopping and restaurants.

The hotel isn't fancy, but the rooms are well-appointed and spotlessly clean. The hotel has great staff who are very helpful and professional. We did not eat at the hotel restaurant, but did have drinks at the bar twice. The drinks were good.

The hotel is across the street from a very expensive hotel, so the location is a very good. We thought the hotel was a good value for our vacation dollar.

We recently spent 3 nights at this hotel. It's location is perfect. It's a block from Union Square, and and easy walk to cable car lines, tram lines, and buses.

The room was lovely, quite modern with a bit of kitchen facilities--a sink and a few dishes, a microwave and coffee maker. The bed was a king, but it was huge, one of those monster Kings.

We ate dinner in the restaurant one night, and spent some time in the bar as well, and both were really quite good. The food at the restaurant was medium-priced for a big city, and delightful. All the staff were also very accommodating.

There was a concierge lounge with coffee and newspapers, and a spa and gym, the latter of which we did not use.

There was only one small downside, and that was street noise, on the Saturday night that we were there. Lots of partiers--of course it helped that the weather was fantastic. I'm thinking you could ask for a quiet room on another side of the hotel. We were facing NE I think.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room if you're there on a Friday or Saturday night.
