“Pleasant surprise!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 March 2012

Well to be honest i was not expecting too much, but i gotta admit that it was a real good experience. First of all the staff was really helpful. The rooms were nice n clean. Room service everyday..free breakfast n coffee available throughout the day! television with all possible channels! free internet.. n airport shuttles in 16 bugs..

Room Tip: avoid taking a room near the duct! its got small window and no bath tub!

The cons: Crazy parking situation, one elevator, smaller rooms. The rooms are smaller but it shouldn't be a problem since you won't be spending the entire day in your room. Parking is pricey at $30 a day, but your car should be safer since you can't access the parking without a control; plus I wouldn't want to park my car on a street overnight anyway.
The pros: This hotel is in an excellent location. You are withing walking distance to bars, restaurants, and entertainment. If you don't want to walk there is public transportation right across the street. There is free continental breakfast and internet provided. Most hotels in the same price range won't offer the same for free. I loved the staff at this hotel, they were amazing. Anytime we had a question or needed assistance the staff was available. I love that this hotel makes you sign a statement about noise when checking in. My last night I had extremely loud people above me. When I called to complain the front desk took care of it quickly. If I'm ever in this area of San Francisco again, I'll definitely consider this hotel.

After really bed experience in Oakland this was fabulous change. good price, great location, very cheerful and very helpful employees, clean room, breakfast for free, coffee 24hours/day and wi-fi in every room. I specially appreciate their commitment to the environment. I can only recommend.

I have to say i read sooo many negative things about this hotel that we were tempted to change the resevation to another hotel but since i know some people may exaggerate a little we decided to stick to it and glad we did every thing is fairly close there's a bus stop right on the corner the room and the bath room is clean my bathroom did have a rubber mat the room is small but we didn't go to sleep we went to enjoy what san francisco had to offer the breakfast was just toast, eggs and yogurt enough for us we actually saved money eating there. The reason why i gave the hotel 4 points is because the walls are thin and i think is hunted atleast room 413 but i didn't mind the opal friendly ghost. the area isn't all that bad keep in mind this is down town and mostly all the down town are the same atleast here in miami fl is similar to there just stick to the mels diner's street and you'll be just fine. wanted to add the staff were really friendly and we would stay in this hotel again keep up the good work.

Room Tip: Try to be quiet in the halls and try not to be loud in the rooms since the walls are thin every thin...

We were pleasantly surprised by the Opal after reading some negative reviews. Our room and bathroom were clean and well equipped, the downtown location great, the price a good value, the continental breakfast just fine, the housekeeping staff efficient, and the front desk staff couldn't have been nicer. When we said we were in town to celebrate my husband's 64th birthday, the manager had a bottle of wine and two glasses sent up to our room--and it was pretty darn good wine, too! We enjoyed our 5-day stay immensely. Only two minor complaints: The hotel is an older building with thin walls, and loud talking can sometimes be heard from adjoining rooms. Also, the bathtub was slippery and could have used a rubber mat. But certainly nothing there to keep us from staying at the Opal again on our next trip to San Francisco!

Room Tip: Ask for fifth (top) floor facing Geary Street. Good urban views from windows and probably less noise...
