Stayed here for a Thur/Fri night. My wife and I were visiting for a wedding. We are fans of boutique type hotels and thought this suited us. It had a funky vibe and was in a location that we hadn't stayed in SF. The location ended up being great- walking distance from a lot. Got to explore Hayes St which is a neat area that I recommend to everybody. Neat hotel restaurant/bar on site. People were very helpful in helping us plan our days exploring different neighborhoods in the city. Overall, we thought the vibe and location were fantastic. The price was extremely reasonable. The down side were the rooms. They were extremely simple and dark. Not a place we wanted to go back and rest in midday and for that matter enjoy in the mornings either. It was unfortunate because everything else about the place suited us. Sat night we moved to the W for a similar rate- better room quality, location not as eccentric/interesting and not the uniqueness that you see with the boutiques. That being said the W was more comfortable for us.

We arrived at The Pheonix to commence our honeymoon fully signed up to the hotels R'nR reputation. Do not let that put you off. We are discerning travellers and we found the funky Phoenix to be a very effective and customer focussed hotel that would be enjoyed by many.
Aestetically it is so different to many chains, its got a look of its own a heated pool and retro style Motel accomodation. It was clean, efficient and friendly, but most of all it was comfortable in its own skin, it didnt try toooooo hard to be cool.
Yes the Tenderloin has its challenges but for experienced urbanites it should hold no fears, it aslo brilliantly located for hitting ALL the districts.
Go there, fall into its very unforced vibe and enjoy The Phoenix

Room Tip: Room 40 very good

I'd echo all the words other reviewers have used for this hotel: fun, funky, friendly, surprising, cool. Basically, they've taken a classic 1960's Motel, decided not to screw with it too much, upgraded some key things, and then ensured that service is friendly, and that the bar / restaurant is buzzy and beautiful. What's not to like?

I say this isn't for everyone, and here's what I mean: they clearly skew towards the fun / party end of things, with a positive encouragement towards bands and rock'n'roll visitors to stay there. Plus, the area, being close/in the Tenderloin would be off-putting for some folks. And the rooms, while spacious, and clean, are I think deliberately kinda low-key and "classic". They've kept the look and feel of the movie motel, while ensuring the right things are upgraded and modern to current standards.

For me, that worked, and was complemented well by the staff, who were great, and very helpful. I liked the area (great Vietnamese food all around!, walking distance to centre of SF, etc.), and the bar restaurant is a real surprise - way cooler than you'd expect, delicious nibbles, and buzzing with a clearly local hipster crowd.

I'd definitely stay again, either for business or pleasure. Loved it.

We booked a room for the weekend at this rock 'n roll hotel (many bands stay here as their go-to place in San Francisco.) It used to be a Caravan Inn and retains some of that 60's style. The rooms are comfortable with an abundance of hot water. The wall heater isn't very efficient, but when you're only sleeping in the room, it will do. I love places that include breakfast, even if it's just coffee and a muffin. The Phoenix has a great variety of muffins and teas, in addition to coffee, every morning. They have a small supply of newspapers, too. Another peak is that parking is available and free. That's hard to find in San Francisco. The heated pool looked temping, but I could never quite make the leap. Other guests did and they seemed to quite enjoy it. This is a great place for the price.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are about the same - just decide whether you want a king or two doubles. The courtyard is lively until 10 or so each night, but everything is quiet after that.

The Phoenix is fun and funky with a terrific vibe. It has a very friendly and efficient staff, it's clean and is a great value. It was surprisingly quiet. Parking is free! It's an 'ironic' setting...vintage 60's (50's?) motor lodge in the middle of San Francisco. The pool is a cool centerpiece. Chambers is off-the-wall chic and a real gem. It's in the Tenderloin, which isn't for everyone, but it's near the Great American Music Hall, great Vietnamese restaurants & Polk Street. Check it out.
