“great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 July 2012

Located at the crossroads of 2 cable car lines. Extremely helpful concierge. Rene and Edgar were 2 of the most professional bartenders I have ever met and I have met a lot of bartenders. They were knowledgable, personable and true gentlemen. Check for the senior rate when staying here and it is discounted.

Room Tip: some rooms have a view of the Transamerica tower and the cable cars whose bells provided a nice wake...

Wonderful luxurious hotel fit for a queen. Plush bed, spa robe and all the amenities. Professional staff. A very comfortable stay. Recommended by a relative. Would definitely return.

Great location, nice frontage, courtyard, pleasant staff, nice room.

So, I was tired enough that I didn't hear the ding ding of the trams after a while.

Only complaint was having to pay for wifi. Come on, guys, hotels way below your standard throw it in for free. Quit making me pay something crazy like $18 for something the Hampton provides gratis. Took the shine off my stay.

We checked into this hotel midweek, and it was full. I was in hopes of using some Marriott points for an upgrade, but no other rooms were available. However, the lady at the front desk did put us in a nice room with a bay window that gave us a little more space and a decent view of the bay. Shortly after checking in, I received a phone call from the front desk making sure everything in the room met our expectations. The room was clean and comfortable, the bathroom was spacious and more like a dressing area. Like a previous reviewer, I was a bit surprised that additional amenities were not provided; a comfy robe would have been appreciated. However, when we decided to open a bottle of wine that we brought along with us, the hotel was quick to send up a corkscrew and two wine glasses. Additional pillows were also quickly sent when requested. The service was excellent, and what I would expect from a hotel such as this. Our room was on the first floor (which is really more like the 3rd or 4th) and faced the trolley line. We could hear the trolley bell ding if we really listened, but it never bothered us or kept us from sleeping.
The location is at the top of Nob Hill, so it is just a short distance from most major tourist points in the city- China Town, Fisherman's Wharf, Union Square, etc. Just be warned, it IS at the top of a hill, a very steep hill, so walking back from any of these places can be quite a workout! If you are lucky enough to catch a cable car, I certainly recommend doing so. We bought a pass that gave us unlimited access to city transportation, and it was money well spent.
The only complaint I had about this hotel was the restaurant/ lounge. We never ate there, but we did have cocktails. $18 for a martini seemed a bit ridiculous, especially when one can go right next door to the Top of the Mark and get the same martini for considerably less and have an amazing view to go along with it.

Booked into this hotel on short notice for a business trip, and as it turned out Google had a big conference in town. So I paid $345 plus taxes for a smallish room. This practice of all the SF hotels smacks of opportunism, so what would otherwise be a 5-star rating gets dinged one star.

Excellent location, as noted by others -- we walked up the hill -- WHEW!

Loved the setting, the view, cleanliness, and the staff. Elevators were slow, though, and the price...Well, it sucked.
