Come when they open, or expect a long wait. Later in the evening, they may stop taking names; for us that happened two hours before their closing time.

Street parking with nearby public parking lot. No reservations are accepted. When waiting your smart phone is sent an app that shows you where you are in line and how long everyone else has been waiting. Pleasant stylish décor. Only set back is that the ambient noise level is high making conversation somewhat difficult. The corn on the cob dish is special; the gyoza delicate, the shoyu ramen tasty. I did not care for the mushroom miso soup as it seemed less that traditional in taste and texture. I suggest the regular miso soup. No Wi-Fi. Reasonable prices.

So I have been to Shizen several times and it is one of the best vegan restaurants I have ever been to. It is a Japanese cuisine with "sushi" spot and boasts lots of great appetizers and some decent ramen choices as well. Shizen does not lean heavily on "fake meats," but instead focuses on highlighting vegetables in the place of meats. The food is fresh and the vibe is upscale, modern, and artistic. The restaurant itself is small and the waits for dinner can be quite long. I recommend planning ahead for some browsing in the Mission while you wait as they do not take reservations. You show up, but your name in and wait (dinner avg 1-2hours) for a table. Luckily Shizen sits at the corner where the shopping / dining part of Valencia begins in the Mission district. You just leave your name and mobile number and they will text you about 15mins before your table is ready so you can walk around and check out the shops (most close around 6 or 7 so time accordingly) until your table is ready. I usually put my name in around 5:00 - 5:30 for dinner around 7:00.

This a very busy popular spot for a good reasons. Beautifully displayed vegetarian offerings many that are creative variations on "california" rolls. We had peppermint tea, wakame sunomono, nameko mushroom miso soup, shizen poke, agedashi tofu, and the proud peacock, mistaken identity, and surprise ending (milder version). All were amazing. Service was gracious and friendly. Danielle was our very nice attentive server. All this food for less than $95 (exclusive of the gratuity). They do not take reservations so arrive early to get a spot. We came just after start of the dinner hour.

My wife and I were in S/F the last of Jan for her birthday and had to try the latest in Vegan Sushi for the first time. Shizen was recommended in the Mission District at 370 14th St. one block East of Valencia. The door opens at 5PM and can accommodate I think about 30 patrons. The line begins to form at around 4:30PM. There was another seating starting at 7PM. Because of the great menu, Sake, and wine selection it's great to take your time to savor all the restaurant has to offer. No rush just pick what time you wish to dine and arrive a early. The initial seating was quick and everyone from the host and servers greet you with a warm welcome and smile. The atmosphere is exciting as people begin to chatter about the food. The servers are well versed on the menu and offer good advise. The large wood high pitched ceiling gives a great open feeling and the seating was just right. The rest rooms are clean I would like to see the door have a vacant latch like on an airplane to let you know the room is or not vacant. It's right at the entrance and lots of people waiting to be seated just an idea. The wooden seats are hard so take your small cushion if you have a bad back like me. However when the drinks are poured and Sushi Rolls roll in you will for get all your pains. This was the greatest experience in vegan food which I never eat. The different flavors from the variety of sushi rolls have made me a believer in Vegan. I never eat sushi without soy sauce which was on the table. I highly recommend to forget the soy sauce and enjoy the incredible taste these chefs produce. This is a must try Vegan Sushi if you are in San Francisco.

The food here was absolutely delicious and this is coming from a non-vegan. We had a spicy ramen, gyoza, beetroot rolls and some jalapeno style rolls as well. All of the food was spot on.
A little pricey and had to wait about an hour for a table but it was worth it in the end. The staff were friendly and happy to help us navigate the menu.
