The Basque-inspired food here was excellent, and the atmosphere is quiet/refined with prompt and friendly service. My husband (he's taken foodie courses at CIA) was in awe of the rack of lamb meal he choose. It was a great place for us to dine and unwind after traveling that day to San Francisco. It's close to Embarcadero and Market Street area hotels. It appears to attractive business travelers and business meetings as the banquet room was busy the Monday night we were there. I think the owner waited on our table and he was friendly and unrushed with our service. Soothing and tranquil would be a good way to describe it.

But not really of the quality you might find in San Sebastian! Decent quality but not memorable quality food or service.

A big fan of Chef Gerald, every time we come to SF, we dine at Piperade. Was thrilled that Chef is STILL serving amazing flavors even though our last visit was a decade ago. We ordered the namesake dish which set the stage for classic Basque cooking. Then the Serrano ham and sheeps milk terrine was my favorite, but I love that type of cheese. The rack of lamb was perfectly seared medium rare. The sea bass was delicate with big flavor. The traditional Basque cake was almond, the perfect finish. Not too heavy. The service was outstanding. We sat at the bar and were treated royally. The person next to us raved about his tomato tarte and Basque rice. The prices were reasonable, not inflated like other high-end restaurants. The environment was elegant and romantic. A wonderful place. A true gem.

Gerard Hirigoyen has created a restaurant that has all the flavours and atmosphere of his native Biarritz. He is a renowned chef, and has written several books.
He treats customers as friends, and if not in the kitchen, he is likely to be pouring wine, while offering recommendations from the extensive list.
The food is exceptional, with new twists on classic Basque dishes as well as some which are just as they would be back home.
Needless to say, this restaurant is very popular, and reservations are essential.

Loved the food. Went twice to this restaurant during our trip to SF. Their piperade is very good but the best are the desserts! Highly recommend the chocolate cake and the Creme Caramel Renversee that actually tastes like a creme caramel :)
