Description: You don't get more San Francisco than Scala's, located just off the Powell Street cable car line, steps from Union Square. And with great location comes great responsibility: that's why we work hard to maintain our reputation as one of the city's most essential dining destinations by creating an atmosphere as sophisticated and inviting as the food we bring to the table.

The place is an italian style restaurant. Quite noisy and dark atmosphere, open kitchen. The Food is at a good quality, but the portions are not big and high price. For example a Pizza is over USD 20 and can be considered a rather small pizza. Drinks are also expensive such as a glass of wine around 12 to 18 dollars. Watch also that not only taxes are applied but also "Healthy SF Mandate", ours was 5.25 on top. At the end the cheque suggests to tip at 18-20%. Consider apr. 60-70 USD per person for nothing large, but good. Service at a level you can expect from such a restaurant. Normally at least 4 stars.

Frank - thank you so much for your review. While our pizzas are not large, we do pride ourselves on our hefty-sized entrees! The Healthy SF Mandate is absolutely optional - it is a city-wide mandate put in place for all SF businesses with more than 20 employees. It helps ensure that all employees have adequate health care - regardless if they are part or full time. In the future just let us know and we are completely able to remove it! Thanks for stopping by and we hope to see you again in the future.

We were going to try Sear's Fine Foods after reading Tripadvisor's reviews, but the line was too long, so we brought our hungry stomachs across the street to Scala's Bistro. OMG, what a find, the food was fresh to order and delicious beyond expectation. Wow, the price was reasonable too! My favorite Kimpton restaurants before were Finch & Fork at the Kimpton Canary in Santa Barbara, and Zuma at Kimpton Epic in Miami (see my reviews and photos.) but I love this place for its fresh and made to order food. Highly recommend!

Whoever cooked my risotto has surely no idea what a risotto should taste like. I got a risotto of the day which was basically wet rice with some veggies for more than 30 usd. My daughter’s chicken (kid’s menu) was topped with pesto which in my view makes no sense for a kid”s menu. My wife says her scallops were average. Was to tired to complain but felt like I had the responsibility to write this review. PS: service was nice.

This restaurant was recommended by our hotel. The hostess was very nice. Our waiter, however, was not friendly and seemed in a rush to get us out. He also didn’t bring us bread which we noticed when we were done with our meal and saw that the other tables around us had bread. One of the glasses we used was dirty and there was a hair in our dessert. The pasta dishes and Caesar salad we ordered were tasty though. The meal was expensive for what we received.

Oh no! I am so sorry to hear that - that is definitely not the experience that we aim to give. If you could please give us some more information about your server we would really appreciate it so we can address and re-train. Thank you so much for leaving this review and we hope for you to return in the future so we can properly knock your socks off.
