There are several artistic places all over the city and as we like street arts in general, I thought it might be a nice idea to join this group on the day where we haven't had planned anything. Carla was a wonderful host, funny, helpful and paid attention to details. My husband who did graffiti for a while was amazed by the arts we saw here, and also the stories Carla shared with us were no only about arts but history of the entire city.

A really great, very interesting walk and talk - with a fabulous host who is clearly very close and very heavily engaged with the community. Highly recommended

A must-do if you are in the Mission. The guides are thoughtful, respectful of the community whose art they are representing. They are incredibly knowledgeable about the history and culture of the mural and some of them are muralists themselves. I highly recommend this experience as it was educational, but also intimate.

We attended the Sunday tour of the nearby murals. Excellent! The guide, who was also herself a muralist, was informative and personable. The tour started with a slide show about murals which helped set the context. Great way to get to know a bit more about the Mission District and San Francisco.

See dozens of the Mission District world-famous murals up close and personal. Most docents are muralists. Get mugs and original art in the gift shop of this beloved, really grass roots nonprofit that has been one of San Francisco's most engaged, down-home art institutions. No high brow here, just passionate love for art and the history of murals and their themes. Grab lunch in one of the great restaurants on 24th Street; you can get Mexican, Thai, Sushi at Basa's (in the back). Check out the Accion Latina gallery while you are here, and pick up some gifts at Mixcoatl and Luz de Luna.

This is an interesting and eye opening education regarding the mural art of the Mission District. Patricia Rose is super passionate about the art, the artists, and the historic significance of all. I learned a great deal and gained some perspective of the history as well as the meanings behind the mural art and the latino culture from which it didn't necessarily originate, but became a symbol and expression of the latino community. Don't confuse mural art with graffiti... it is not in any way shape or form related.
We toured a couple ally ways, and then took to the streets to view art on the sides of buildings around the couple of blocks. The Mission District has the largest concentration of mural art in the country.
If I were to offer any suggestion to Precitas Eyes, it would be to cut the slide show down a little, by not showing slides of art work we were about to step outside and see. The history lesson was great though.
After the tour, we walked around quite a bit more, checking out the other ally ways that were not on the tour. There is a lot going on in the Mission District. A great deal of change is coming. And, I fear that cultural art such as this will soon fade away...

The Mission District is a thriving multi-cultural hub of San Francisco. It has long been a place where immigrant families and artists intermingle...that is until the tech industry hipsters discovered it. The dynamic of sometimes violent native lands they escaped, their love of their neighborhood, and modern day pressures are vividly captured in murals found throughout. The Precita Eyes mural tour brings all of this to life. Yes, there is information about the "business" of painting murals (who selects where they are painted, how are they painted, etc.). But where it all comes to life is in having a docent tell the story behind each mural, what inspired these brilliant artists. If you enjoy art--public art especially--this is a must journey in San Francisco.

The murals may not be as iconic as the Golden Gate, or Alcatraz, but don't miss this area - the mission district is a gem.

Precita Eyes offers walking tours for the murals for $10-20. Before the walking tour begins, the tour guide gives a short art history lesson and provides context for the murals you are about to see. This is great because it enriches your experience of the murals later. The murals are beautiful.

The murals are incredible and mission district is unlike any other area. The murals, like all art, are diverse and tell a range of stories about history, politics, or about the beauty of present day life. You leave with an understanding of how close-knit the community is and how the murals really bring the community together to express shared experiences along with personal narratives. Amazing!

we reserved well ahead of time and attended, together with a dozen folks the 2PM tour.
Patricia was the perfect guest, starting with a slide show (yes the real fading slides on a projector) to explain the history of the art, from prehistoric caves to more recent times, and then on a relatively relaxed tour of the area, full of passionate comments on the social issues and of love for the people (artists and not). Just a few blocks of walking gave us a good idea of the various techniques and of the motivation behind many pieces of art.

Show the local mural artists your support and start here before going on a self-directed tour of the Murals. They also offer guides so stop by and find out when those are if you would rather see the murals that way. They have some of the murals as posters and cards, and you can also just leave a small donation to support their work in the community. The women running the little shop/gallery/studio were very pleasant and introduced us to a young muralist whose work we were then able to go see. This is a little treasure not to be missed in the Mission!
