After learning this place existed, it is the only place we stay in San Fran now. Zero complaints: great location, nice staff, historic building, well appointed rooms, great breakfast buffet, complimentary evening reception. Excellent all the way around. If you military of any type, you get a fairly sizeable discount on room rates.

My girlfriend and I got a room at a discounted rate and had a brilliant stay. I have to admit that if we had paid full price I may have been slightly disappointed at the lack of view from our room (a brick wall) and the slightly dated furnishings and decor. The soundproofing of the windows could have been better too. That being said, the hotel is a non-profit organisation in a brilliant location and there is so much to do in San Francisco that we were so exhausted at the end of each day that none of this had a bad effect on our stay.
Free breakfast buffet with a wide choice of quality food and two hours of free drinks each night, OK tips were expected but this is the USA and the staff are very attentive, if you can live with the bad karma of not tipping then ... free food and drink (but shame on you!).
All in all, I am extremely glad we found this place, a brilliant base for a brilliant holiday. If you are really fussy and demand perfection then pay lots more to stay in a little better with no inclusive breakfast or booze.

Room Tip: Our south facing room had only a view of a brick wall and persistent (but not loud) machinery noise...

This was a nice visit but started shaky.

We payed full retail at $199 per night so you would think they would take care of us.

FORGET EARLY CHECK-IN: We took Amtrak from Seattle so after a 21 hour train ride we arrived at the hotel at 10:00 am with our luggage. They told us they would try to accommodate with an early check-in, all we needed to do is leave our bags with the bell captain and they will call us as soon as they have a clean room. We were told that there were a lot of people leaving that morning since we checked in on Memorial Day and most were checking out after spending the long weekend there. They finally called us with our room AT 4:00 PM, it's hard to believe they didn't have one clean room until 4:00 (the normal check-in time). I think it's because my husband didn't tip the woman at the desk that said she would call.
LOST LUGGAGE: When we did get in our room they couldn't find our luggage, apparently it was put into another room earlier in the day.
STEAKHOUSE: Was closed for Memorial Day, a little disappointing but understandable so we ate at Morton's Steakhouse and it was delicious.
BREAKFAST: The breakfast the next morning was nice but not worth he extra money to stay here since there are nicer less expensive hotel options.

The Leatherneck Steakhouse is a wonderful yet intimate place. The steaks were as good as Ruth Chris, the servers were attentive and friendly, and the view of Downtown with a faraway view of the Bay was fabulous. The prices are also reasonable for this type of place. We ate here twice and the steaks melt in your mouth. Had a side for two of large sized asparagus with Hollandaise that were incredible!! A great experience and would not try another steak place here.
The hotel is also great.Free full buffet breakfast which was great and varied each day.Room had nice appointments, fruit and cheese tray each day. They treat you right and I will only stay here on any visit to SF.

We stayed 8 nights recently at Marines Memorial Club Hotel. Used it as a base to do day tours by bus.
Reception very good. Location very good, close to Union Square and downtown SF, plus good access to transport, street cars, cable cars. Rooms were old world but comfortable, big bed, good shower and fridge, what more do you want? Bit noisy though, we were on 7th floor and constant AC noise from other buildings rooftops, plus traffic noise. Breakfast good, hot and cold selection. Afternoon happy hour also very good. All the staff in hotel were excellent. No real complaints, although price of $179 during week and $199 at weekend PLUS taxes, was a little high I thought.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms facing Sutter St. Also go for corner rooms, a little larger and brighter.
