“Not so sure why so many bad reviews.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 March 2012

This is not a stellar hotel, by all means, but it is certainly not the "hell hole" that some are describing it as. Not even close.

It's obviously an old building, but my room - while not being huge - was comfortable, clean and well appointed, as well as freshly painted. The bed provided a decent night's sleep and while there is some noise from outside (it's in the middle of SF!) it is certainly nothing more than I would expect. Free wifi is always appreciated when I stay in any hotel, so it scores well enough here, and it has a great location.

I also don't really understand the comments regarding the staff and check-in as mine was seamless, efficient and polite. The more recent set of reviews feel rather like a set of people joining some sort of bandwagon, or I arrived there after the highlighted criticisms were addressed. Either way, unless you're looking for a 5-star stay, then you won't be too disappointed by the Pickwick.

I was recently booked by my office admin in this hotel, who as of today no longer gets to choose my hotels...

Hotel is in great location if you are going to a convention at Moscone. Bedding clean. That's the good.

Rooms are cramped, and not ideal for a business traveler. Bathroom so small I can spread my arms and touch walls. The mini sink is under a marble shelf that I nearly took myself out on just trying to brush my teeth. The rest of the trip I had visions of hitting my head on the shelf, falling back into shower and the maid finding my corpse the next day.

Carpets dirty and worn, walls have chipped paint.

The biggest problem with my room, 235 was at 3am the dumpster is picked up and a new one is delivered.

I only have 3 rules for a hotel, it's gotta be clean, it's gotta be quiet and I need Internet access. This misses the mark. Stay away.

We stayed in this "hell hole" in late January 2012, and it was awfull!!! from check in amateurish and very unfriendly, to concierge who just refused to acknowledge our existence!!! bedroom corridors and bedrooms smell of damp!!! this is truly the worst hotel i have ever stayed in, even writing this review makes me feel angry i chose it!! what was a wonderful city has been sadly tarnishe by this very poor excuse for a hotel!!!

Room Tip: Go to another hotel!! avoid this one at all costs!!!

Think a foggy night in San Francisco and an old fashioned mystery novel. The Pickwick could easily be the hotel it takes place in. Like many other boutique hotels in SF it needs to be taken for what it is, a bit faded, tattered around the edges but modern enough to be a good value. Primarily recommended for its proximiy to the Moscone Center and market street for shopping and catching a cable car, the rooms are comfortable, the internet is good and free ( more than can be said for some top tier nearby hotels) and the TV channel selection was above average. A comfortable and reasonable base of operations for stay in San Francisco.

Room Tip: Rooms facing 5th ST. can be a bit noisy due to traffic. Generally quiet at night though

Stayed in room 307 and was bitten by bed bugs, then went online and saw that the hotel had several complaints for the same issue so AVOID THIS PLACE! Walls were dirty, bathrooms need to be redone urgently, carpets are stained, but clearly all these things pale in comparison to the bed bug issue (check bedbugregistry website and you will find a list of complaints for the hotel). So in all honesty go somewehere else
