I love the fresh simple ingredients of the pies and pastry. No added fillers, stabilizers, preservatives, and coloring. No nasty aftertaste just fresh buttery and flavorful baked goods. I am a fan!

It's been a couple of years since I visited Mission Pie and it is holding up well. This little neighborhood spot in the Mission specializes in home made pies that are well done. There are some other things as well, but the focus really is the pie. When you come in the door, IF you find a table open, grab it. This is a busy place especially on weekends. We went on a Tuesday night which was perfect. There are the usual hipsters hanging out on their phones, tablets and laptops, but just as many groups of friends here to have a good conversation.

We sampled the strawberry rhubarb, walnut and chess pies. All were very good. The pastry was very good but not perfect, but then that's what makes it like Mom's. The walnut pie had lots of walnuts and a thin layer of transparent custard (the pecan pie stuff) for just enough richness to counterpoint the toasty crush of the walnuts. The thinness of the custard layer also lets more of the walnuts get toasted. The strawberry rhubarb was also very good (although, I have to say, mine is better). The chess pie is an old Southern favorite, a rich custard that actually would be perfect with some rhubarb sauce in addition to the optional whipped cream.

Orders are taken at the counter and the pies delivered to table a few minutes later. The service was fast and friendly. For three of us it was about $18--not bad, as we say in the Midwest, could be worse. So do give it a try if you're in the Mission.

Apple and Blackberry Pie with icecream was delicious. Managed to make it here during happy hour for a $3 local beer which was a bonus. Worth a visit!

We saved room for dessert after a hefty lunch at La Taqueria. I asked the counter person what pie is the day's special. So I ordered the banana cream, and she had the walnut. Both were so out-of-this-world, fresh tasting ingredients, large, and a perfect match with their dark roast coffee.
It was a memorable lunch in the colorful Mission district.

Really delicious baked stuff and good coffee here, but most depressing that chocolate pie is not available during the week.
