“Want to sleep on BLOOD???”
Reviewed 20 October 2011

After realizing you've been sleeping on a pile of blood (more than a cut on the toe or a period leak, we are talking stabbing or miscarriage size) for four nights you'd expect the hotel manager to say more than 'you guys just want a refund because you have no money'. After arguing and making them loose business for 10 minutes telling the people trying to book in be careful there not a pile of blood under your sheets, I was able to get one night refunded. One night. Pfffft. Money is not the issue here, it's moral. Disgusted.

Room Tip: Just avoid no idea what other rooms got blood or other disgusting bodily fluid,

I spent 3 nights at the room 136 at Europa hotel. I barely slept because of the noise of the nightclub, which I believe, was just below my room. It was extremely noisy until 3am.
Moreover the room was dirty and the smell was horrible. The shared bathroom was not perfect as well. It is a shame that the owners called this hotel "Europa hotel". Poor Europe...

The only positive point is the price, certainly the cheapest in town.

This hotel was not as bad as other reviewers made it seem. I lived in Peru for 6 months, so maybe my standards are a little lower when it comes to hostel quality, but this place is not bad. There is a television, microwave, and minifridge. Our room was the corner room and we had sign for The Condor right outside one of our windows, the sign is for the strip club immediately downstairs which lights up at night. It added a little character. There are about 4 strip clubs surrounding but they are only active at night and are very localized to the corner of Broadway and Columbus. I didn't feel that unsafe at night because this is a very touristy area being so close to North Beach, the Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown. The area during the day is nice with many very good cafes and restaurants. The location is great, many sights are walkable. The bathrooms aren't that great visually, but the showers did have hot water and there was always toilet paper. The room cleanliness is alright, not too skeezy. The staff are very friendly and helpful, offering to let us stay in a inside room if the street noise bothered us, but the noise level wasn't that bad. I live in a big city, New Orleans, so city noise is normal for me. It's the normal ambulances, traffic, people on the street. For the price, you can't go wrong. I would definitely stay here again.

Pros: cheap
Cons: street noise, dodgy neighbourhood, barely adequate bathrooms, cockroaches

Noise

The street noise is very loud in rooms facing the street: heavy traffic, loud arguments in colourful language, and fireworks every night. The noise alone would discourage me from coming back to hotels in this area.

Neighbourhood

It's a pretty seedy red light district (which contributes to the noise). It's fine in the day, but when coming back to the hotel at night, I didn't feel safe being outside for a moment longer than necessary (especially since I'm a transgender woman).

Cleanliness

Bedsheets had not been cleaned from the previous guest. I saw the occasional cockroach, although not a major infestation.

Bathrooms etc.

There are shared bathrooms on each corridor. They have tiny stalls and no mirrors (there was a mirror and sink in my room, though). There is often water and wet paper on the bathroom floors.

Staff

I didn't have much interaction with the staff, but they seemed reasonably helpful and friendly.

Wifi

The wifi is flaky. They changed during my stay from standard WEP, to an HTTP proxy that intercepts the connection to ask for a password. This is a bad idea and is bound to be incompatible with lots of software (for example it causes Firefox to start in off-line mode, and won't work with HTTPSEverywhere). It does support non-HTTP protocols if you manage to get past the password page, but the connection is unreliable and drops out frequently.
