“Wonderful collection of art in a scenic location”
Reviewed 27 May 2012

The Legion of Honor Museum is my favorite museum in San Francisco. Located on a hill overlooking the city and Golden Gate Bridge, the views are fantastic. The permanent colleection consists of excellent examples of many periods. My favorites are 2 George de la Tour paintings, the collection of French furniture, the ceiling from a
Spanish castle, and Dutch still life paintings. A lovely way to spend several hours without feeling overwhelmed.
Great special exhibits too. Organ concerts are fun on weekend afternoons.

“Rodin and history”
Reviewed 26 May 2012

I have loved this museum ever since I was a little girl.
The architecture is still gorgeous, they haven't turned it into a "modern monstrosity" like the De Young in San Francisco.
Rodin's sculpture take up the entire center sunlit arched gallery.
Downstairs, there is usually a special exhibit. They had a marvelous one on King Tug complete with video on how mummies were made. The exhibit on Paris was also fabulous and recently many great exhibits.
My favorite section, always there, is the china and pottery. Such gorgeous pieces.
Not only is the art that is changing is wonderful, but the art that stays as well. the views and the museum itself are worth a visit even if you don't go inside.
YOu can see the Golden Gate Bridge just down the street from the parking lot.
I never go to San Francisco without stopping by.

“More great views”
Reviewed 23 May 2012

I discovered that everything in San Francisco is "all about the views". When you read reviews of anything in SF, you will inevitably see the word "view." So, I admit the views from the museum are fantastic. But.... that should not be the driving reason for going there, because there are plenty of places with great views. You should go because you want to visit the museum and see its exhibits.

The museum is a bit out of the way, so you will either have to drive or take the bus and walk about one-half mile uphill or take a cab. (Note: buses go directly to/from museum during rush hours (6 - 8a and 4 - 6p). It is a relatively small museum, but well done with lots of oil paintings, and furnishings from the 16th - 19th century's. I am jaded because I have seen lots of really exquisite art, but the art at Legion is outstanding. They also have several pieces by Rodin.

I did stop for lunch there and the cafe has a small, but very tasty selection of sandwiches and salads. Apparently, it is also a place for "afternoon tea".

All in all, it's a good museum, but with so many other places to go in SF, I would not place this high on the goto list unless you are a major art connosseur.

“Beautiful and thoughtful”
Reviewed 22 May 2012

I recommend taking the trolley, bus, bike and/or walk. Take your time. The whole afternoon. The property is iconic San Francisco, maybe. Sea cliffs and Monterey cypress. Meandering trails. And the squawk of sea birds, the deep booming wail of the inside buoey. Glimpses of Golden Gate Bridge. Robin's thinker dominates the courtyard at the museum and does so with great affect. There is a peaceful and yet meaningful air to the place. The art collection inside is top notch for a small museum, but limited. Maybe a little overpriced for idyll patrons, but worth it for those who have a healthy appreciation for art of any kind. A pleasant stroll down to cliff house for a drink is a good way to segway into whatever you've got planned next.

“Legion of Honor: A Taste of Europe in San Francisco!”
Reviewed 21 May 2012

The Legion of Honor is well worth the time and energy required to visit. Public transport will deliver you to the door and what wonders await you once you are there. Enter the beautiful, spacious exhibition halls, talk with the friendly, knowledgeable staff, enjoy the sculpture, paintings, furniture, and artistic wonders that span millenia yet speak to today. Set in a splendid natural location, the Legion of Honor, its collections and its current "Cult of Beauty" exhibition proved a favourite San Francisco experience. If you enjoy art or are open to the opportunity to learn to do so, the Legion of Honor offers one of the best experiences you can have outside of Europe. Leave yourself a few moments to relax and refresh at the Legion's tea shoppe before you continue on your adventures.
