Homegrown theater! This is the way it all starts where superstars are born. Great to see local talent strut their wares. Attended Will Durst political humor show all about about Donald Trump(DT) days in office. Will was very entertaining, spot on in analogies and very funny but, truly the audience reactions that stole this show! I did expect DT bashing by Will but, the audience hatred, name calling, jaring negativism and simple hatred displayed seemed more like a Hillary rally. I guess I was in over my head, just thinking I was going to be entertained and not join a movement.

The Marsh I guess you would say, is an incubator for theatrical folks of all stripes, both the seasoned and the up and comers. That's the fun... you never know what they're going to have there... but one thing is for certain, it will be great theatre on the cheap! For example, the current offerings (NOV 17) include one-man shows by Will Durst and Don Read, both seasoned comedy veterans, and a one-woman show by Kate Robards, and up and comer. The venue is smack dab in the middle of the Mission, near lots of fun restaurants (Hog & Rocks is a good one) and there's even after-the-show nitro ice cream close by at Smitten, the original nitrogen ice cream. Show tickets are often available even more on the cheap on Goldstar.com. Add it all up: a super night out... Highly recommended.

Don Reed's one man show was both funny and moving. The characters are finely drawn and his portrayal made them all come to life. Even if your father wasn't a pimp or your step father a Jehovah's Witness, you will recognize people you know. Enjoyed every minute in this intimate setting.

The Marsh is a breeding ground for creativity. The Main stage has about 100 seats. We went to see The Real Americans by Dan Hoyle - a piercingly honest look at who we are and how difficult real communication can be. This play was originally developed at The Marsh over 6 years ago and has toured the country.
This is the type of production that is promoted here. They have lots of solo acts as well as youth theatre and shows by what they refer to as rising talent. Here is were creativity is given a chance to bloom.
Make it a point to check out one of their productions.

Dan Hoyle is a local actor who has done a number of one man shows at the Marsh. He is a marvelous mimic who captures the essence of the multiple characters whom he portrays remarkably well with just a change of hat and facial & vocal changes. We do not at all tire of seeing him even do the same show again, although I think we're seen all of his shows. Highly recommended!!

We saw "Each and Every Thing" on Friday night.......Dan Hoyle is amazing, funny, clever, such a great observer and writer as well as performer. He is a master. I was reminded of when we used to see Lily Tomlin at The Boardinghouse in SF (30 years ago??). Both Lily and Dan Hoyle have created and embodied wonderful characters they had met (well, maybe with a little exaggeration and embroidery) and they show us something about life, with a capital L.
The Marsh is presents insightful, intelligent shows. A very special San Francisco experience.

The Marsh hosts some of the US' top solo performers. These gifted artists can hold your attention on stage - with little or no props - for over an hour with their stories. Some of the artists can portray as many as 10 different characters in the space of a performance. Others are more straight up stories about the life of one or two characters. The tickets are affordable and the venue is small, so get there early for the choicest center seats (although the side seats aren't bad - you just won't always have the performer facing you like they do when you sit in the middle.) I highly recommend going for a great night of entertainment.

I wish I could give this theatre a higher rating because I REALLY enjoyed the performance. (Grumpy old Jew by Charlie Varon) However I felt the theatre itself was lacking in several area. The first was that we couldn't by tickets online. It was Saturday morning when we were researching plays to see for Sunday night. The Marsh lets you buy tickets over the phone but only on Mon. - Fri. 9 to 5. So the only thing we could do was go to the theatre when the box office opened which was 30 mins before the show started and hope they weren't sold out. Which they were! But we waited to see if there were some no shows and we got tickets on standby. Actually got 2 good seats right in front too. :) But seriously, it is SO easy to sell tickets online now days - why wouldn't they?
The theatre was very small and a little run down. (More of a black box theatre really.) But still it was great place for being what it is; a small, intimate community theatre. The staff was very kind and helpful also. We had a good time and I'd defiantly go back.

One of the best entertainment deal in San Francisco The Marsh is the internationally known for solo performance theater. It's almost impossible to see a show at The Marsh that won't give you something to think about and and realize what a great theater experience can be.

With two stages in San Francisco and two in Berkeley, both near BART and public transportation, it's easy to get to them. Whether it's Charlie Varon, Dan Hoyle or a new comer The Marsh is always entertaining at a good price.

This review is for the Berkeley location of The Marsh, located at 2120 Allston Way, Berkeley.

If you're looking for an inexpensive evening out with a friend(s), go to the Marsh's website and see what shows are lined up. The theater is small and they tend to have one-person shows. Plan an evening of dinner at Gather, (or one of many good restaurants nearby), then enjoy the show. I mention Gather because they are well reviewed and just a short walk from The Marsh. After the show, you can go out for coffee. This is all in Downtown Berkeley.
